Atletico Madrid vs FC Barcelona: Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga Escalates
What began as a transfer story around Julian Alvarez exploded into a full-blown political skirmish between Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona on Thursday, played out in public and with barely concealed hostility.
Barcelona, fresh from landing Anthony Gordon, had moved on to Alvarez as their next big target. According to reports, the Catalan club tabled an opening bid of €100 million to Atletico Madrid for the forward, a move revealed earlier in the day by Fabrizio Romano. From there, the temperature rose quickly.
Social media jabs and Deco in the firing line
Atletico did not stay silent. They went on the offensive.
On their official social media accounts, the Rojiblancos posted a string of mocking “offers” featuring Barcelona players edited into Atleti shirts. The tone was unmistakable: ridicule, not negotiation.
They then turned their attention to Deco. In another sarcastic post, Atletico claimed they had “not offered” Barcelona’s sporting director a role in their scouting department in Brazil. It was a pointed dig at the man leading Barça’s transfer strategy, and a clear sign that this was no ordinary tug-of-war over a player.
The posts framed Barcelona as the aggressors in the market and Atletico as the club ready to fight back in the court of public opinion.
From jokes to open war
The jokes did not last long.
Later in the day, Atletico released a new statement. This time, the humour vanished. The club shifted from memes to a hard-edged denunciation of what it called a wider campaign around one of its players.
“No, Atletico Madrid would never do something like that. However, in recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players,” the statement opened, swatting away the idea that their earlier social content reflected official behaviour while simultaneously raising the stakes.
They went on to rail against “leaked information with ulterior motives,” “fake news,” and “constant disrespect,” accusing what they described as “the Cule version of the propaganda machine” of inventing stories and even making calls before direct clashes between the sides.
The pressure finally told in the closing lines, where Atletico dropped any remaining restraint and went straight for Barcelona’s most sensitive nerve.
“But of course, it wouldn’t occur to us either to have the referees’ vice president on our payroll or to resort to political favors to register players. RESPECT and VALUES.”
With that, Atletico dragged the Negreira case into the Alvarez saga, turning a transfer pursuit into a moral and institutional confrontation.
Barcelona’s plan, Atletico’s stance
On the sporting side, Barcelona’s intentions are clear. After securing Anthony Gordon, they have identified Alvarez as the next pillar of their rebuild. Deco met this week with Fernando Hidalgo, the player’s agent, to explore the move, and the €100 million offer to Atletico followed.
For now, that proposal has not brought the clubs any closer. Instead of quiet talks behind closed doors, the situation has spilled into the open, with accusations, sarcasm, and historical grievances all wrapped around the name of Julian Alvarez.
The market is only just warming up. If this is how the first bid looks, what happens when the real negotiating starts?
