Barcelona's LaLiga Title Defence: Key Player Updates

Barcelona will begin their LaLiga title defence without their marquee midfield signing, but with a bench full of intriguing attacking options and one very familiar full-back ready to go.

Rodri waits, but not for long

Hansi Flick confirmed on Saturday that Rodri will sit out Sunday’s opener against Elche, despite the excitement around his arrival from Manchester City.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick told reporters. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

Barcelona paid a fee that could climb to 76.5 million euros for the Spanish World Cup winner, a clear statement that Flick wants to build his midfield around him. The wait should be short: the coach indicated Rodri could feature as early as Thursday, when Barca face Athletic Bilbao.

Striker void after Lewandowski and Ferran exits

The midfield looks reinforced. The forward line does not.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres gone, Barcelona enter the season without a clear first-choice No 9. The club are still combing the market for a striker, but the league campaign will not pause while they search.

Flick declined to reveal who will lead the line at the Martinez Valero, keeping his cards close. What he did not hide was his admiration for one teenager forcing his way into the conversation.

Hamza’s pre-season surge

Hamza Abdelkarim, just 18, has barged into the spotlight with four goals in pre-season friendlies. The Egyptian youngster has given Flick something to think about.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” said the coach. “He’s a No 9, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

Goals talk. In a squad suddenly without its veteran finisher, Hamza’s timing could hardly be better.

False nines and flexible wingers

If Flick does not turn to the teenager from the start, he has other, more experienced, but unconventional options.

New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can operate centrally as false nines. So can Raphinha and Dani Olmo, giving Barcelona a fluid, rotating front line rather than a fixed reference point.

It might not look like the classic Barca No 9. It might be harder to defend.

Cancelo ready on day one

At the back, one new face is already in position.

Joao Cancelo, brought in this week to strengthen the flanks, is available for the trip to Elche and could feature immediately.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” Flick said.

Rodri will have to wait for his first minutes. Cancelo will not. And between a teenage poacher and a pack of roaming wingers, Barcelona’s first big question of the season is clear: who scores the goals now that Lewandowski has gone?
