Breel Embolo Joins Switzerland's World Cup Camp After Visa Approval
Breel Embolo will finally join Switzerland’s World Cup camp in the United States after days of uncertainty over his right to enter the country.
The Swiss football federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old striker has received his visa and is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, reuniting with Murat Yakin’s squad at their pre-tournament base in California.
What should have been a routine trip turned into an anxious wait. While his team-mates flew out on Tuesday, Embolo stayed behind in Switzerland, grounded by an ESTA travel authorisation that was suddenly pushed into “further review” shortly before departure. Bags packed, spot in the squad secure, but no clearance to board.
The delay forced the Swiss to begin their World Cup preparations without one of their key attacking options. Training sessions went ahead, but always with the unspoken question: when is Embolo arriving?
The answer came after U.S. authorities ordered additional checks and summoned the forward to the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday. Officials examined documents linked to a legal case stemming from a 2018 altercation in Basel, as well as court records from a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats. That case resulted in a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year.
The legal matters had already run their course in Switzerland, yet they triggered extra scrutiny under U.S. entry rules before the visa was finally approved.
“The matter has been resolved” was the clear message from the federation on Thursday, which announced: “We have just been informed that Breel Embolo’s visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening.”
For Yakin and his staff, it restores a crucial piece of their attacking puzzle just in time. For Embolo, it ends a week spent waiting on a decision made far from the pitch, and opens the door back to the stage where Switzerland expect him to make a difference.
