Cologne Stands Firm on El Mala Amid Dortmund Transfer Collapse
Cologne’s managing director Christian Kessler has drawn a firm line under Said El Mala’s failed move to Borussia Dortmund, insisting the collapsed transfer was the product of calm, respectful talks rather than late drama or bad blood.
According to Kessler, the deal had been drifting towards a dead end for days. There was no shock, no sudden twist.
“It had been clear for several days that we weren't going to reach an agreement, it didn't come out of the blue for us. It was simply the outcome of very respectful discussions between the two clubs. That's football – you don't always manage to find an agreement,” he said, as quoted by the official Bundesliga website.
A teenager with Champions League ambitions
Kessler did not try to play down El Mala’s ambitions. The 19-year-old has been linked with a step up to Europe’s elite, and his boss accepts that curiosity.
“It's perfectly understandable that a player of his age would consider a move to a Champions League club,” the 40-year-old admitted.
The attraction is obvious: a rising talent, a traditional powerhouse in Dortmund, and the lure of the Champions League. Yet Cologne believe they still offer the right stage for the forward’s next steps.
Commitment, not sulking
If there were fears that a collapsed transfer might leave a frustrated youngster going through the motions, Kessler moved quickly to shut them down.
“I don't see any disappointment in him. I'm in touch with Said almost every day, and we speak very openly about the situation. And judging by the way he conducts himself and wears our shirt, he's clearly very proud to be a Cologne player.”
The message is clear: no sulking, no split dressing room, no distraction. El Mala, Kessler insists, remains fully locked in.
Cologne plan with El Mala – for now
Kessler has repeated the same line for weeks and did not deviate this time. As things stand, El Mala is staying put at RheinEnergieStadion.
“I can only repeat what I've been saying for weeks: I'm convinced he’ll be playing for Cologne this season.”
That conviction sets the tone for the club’s planning. El Mala is not a bargaining chip for the final days of the window; he is at the heart of their campaign.
Interest will return
Cologne are not naïve about what comes next. If El Mala continues on his current trajectory, this will not be the last time bigger clubs circle.
“Players who develop well here will naturally attract interest from other clubs. This certainly won’t be the last time in our lives that we've sat around a negotiating table with Borussia Dortmund.”
The door to Dortmund is closed for now, but the stage is set. If El Mala delivers the season Cologne are banking on, the next round of negotiations will be louder, richer, and far harder to ignore.
