Crystal Palace Targets Pierre Sage as Coaching Search Intensifies

Crystal Palace’s search for a new head coach is moving towards a crucial week, with Lens manager Pierre Sage now firmly in the frame to replace Oliver Glasner at Selhurst Park.

Sage, one of the rising coaching figures in European football, is expected to hold talks with Palace in the early part of this week as the club recalibrates its plans. The 47-year-old is understood to be open to a move, and Palace are ready to explore that possibility in detail.

Their pursuit of Andoni Iraola, however, is fading fast. Palace had identified the Bournemouth boss as their first-choice candidate and pushed hard to tempt him to south London. But the Spaniard is now set to begin formal talks with Liverpool in the coming days, with the Merseyside club moving quickly after sacking Arne Slot on Saturday.

Palace had made a firm proposal to Iraola on the back of his impressive work and recent Conference League triumph, but the landscape has shifted. As he edges towards Anfield, the Eagles have been forced to widen the field.

Chairman Steve Parish is determined not to rush a decision. Palace are weighing up a number of options, with the process now more open than when Iraola appeared within reach. Sage sits prominently on that shortlist.

BBC Sport first revealed Palace’s interest in Sage on 8 May, though at that stage the club’s hierarchy remained locked on Iraola and a potential deal with Bournemouth. With that route now likely blocked, attention has turned back to the Lens boss, whose reputation continues to grow across the continent.

Talks in the coming days will shape Palace’s next move. For a club intent on building on recent progress, the question is no longer who they wanted first, but who they believe can lead the next phase from here.
