Federico Chiesa Considers Future at Liverpool with Iraola
Federico Chiesa will sit down with new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola before making a final call on his future, but the direction of travel is clear: all signs still point towards the exit door at Anfield.
The Italy international has never truly settled on Merseyside. His second season brought more involvement, yet when it came to the Premier League, the trust never really followed. One start in the league last season tells its own story for a 28-year-old forward who should be playing at full throttle, every week, not waiting for scraps from the bench.
A Career That Can’t Stand Still
Chiesa is entering the years that define a career. Players at his age don’t want promises, they want minutes.
He has made it clear that regular football is non-negotiable. That single league start has sharpened the debate around his future and pushed his situation towards a decision point. Iraola’s arrival has injected fresh energy into the squad and opened a small window for those who struggled under the previous regime, but there is no guarantee that a change in the dugout will transform Chiesa’s status.
The winger knows it. Liverpool know it. So does the market.
The player has already stressed that talks with Iraola will be crucial before he decides his next move. The conversation will not be about sentiment. It will be about role, hierarchy, and how often he actually plays.
Romano: Expectation Points to a Summer Exit
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has laid out the current mood around Chiesa’s future.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano relayed the player’s own words and the growing sense of inevitability around a departure.
“Today Federico Chiesa spoke in Italy and said I want to play on a more consistent basis. So, the expectation is for Federico Chiesa to leave Liverpool this summer,” Romano said. “That’s the expectation, that’s the plan.
“Then he said ‘I want to go on tour to the US, speak to the new manager, Andoni Iraola, to understand my situation. But I want to play, I need to play.’”
Those comments cut straight to the heart of the issue. Chiesa is not looking for a marginal role or a rotation label. He wants to be central, not peripheral.
US Tour: Last Chance or Farewell Lap?
Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States now carries extra weight for the winger.
On the face of it, it offers a clean slate: new manager, new ideas, new system. For Chiesa, it is a rare chance to impress Iraola in real time, to show he can be more than a squad option and force his way into the Spaniard’s plans before competitive football returns.
The stakes are high. One strong tour could change perceptions. One subdued showing could confirm what many already suspect.
Yet even with that opportunity on the horizon, Romano reports that the expectation around the player remains largely unchanged.
“And so, Federico Chiesa could have opportunities to leave Liverpool and the expectation of those close to the player is that he could really leave after being close to leaving in January.
“Now could be the moment to say goodbye to Liverpool.”
Those close to Chiesa still view a move as the most likely outcome. He was already near the exit in January; this summer feels less like the start of a conversation and more like its conclusion.
Unless Iraola can offer clear, concrete assurances over playing time – not vague promises, but a defined role in his project – Chiesa’s next decisive run of games may well come in a different shirt.
