Ibrahima Konate Leaves Liverpool for Real Madrid: A Shocking Transfer

Ibrahima Konate is set to swap Anfield for the Bernabeu on a free transfer – and the numbers behind his Real Madrid deal underline exactly why Liverpool could not keep him.

The French defender’s contract on Merseyside expires on June 30 after prolonged talks over an extension broke down. Liverpool confirmed his departure last weekend in the same breath as announcing the dismissal of Arne Slot, drawing a sharp line under a turbulent end to the season.

Konate has since spoken publicly, admitting he was “deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game”. His farewell will now come from afar, with his next chapter already mapped out.

A Galactico salary without a fee

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Konate has verbally agreed to join Real Madrid on a four-year contract, contingent on Florentino Perez winning the upcoming presidential election against challenger Enrique Riquelme. The agreement runs until 2030 and carries the kind of money that instantly explains the split with Liverpool.

El Desmarque report that Konate will earn €24 million gross per season in Spain – roughly €460,000 a week, or about £400,000 before tax. Over four years, that takes the total value of the contract to a reported £83 million if he sees it out.

The deal does not stop there. Because he arrives as a free agent, Konate is also in line for a signing-on bonus of around £17 million. It is the classic modern super-club equation: no transfer fee, enormous personal package.

For comparison, Konate was said to be on around £150,000 a week at Liverpool. Real’s offer catapults him into an entirely different financial bracket, the kind of wage packet that simply was not on the table at Anfield.

He has, according to reports, already rejected a huge proposal from Saudi Arabia to make the move to Madrid. Turning down the Saudi millions for the Bernabeu spotlight tells its own story about his priorities: legacy and trophies, with a Galactico salary to match.

Liverpool left to rebuild their back line

While Konate prepares for life in white, Liverpool are scrambling to reshape a defence suddenly stripped of experience and stature.

Andoni Iraola has just been appointed as the successor to Slot, but the new head coach walks into a squad bracing for major surgery. Konate is going, Andy Robertson is heading out, and Mo Salah is also departing. Three pillars of the Klopp era, gone in one window.

The search for reinforcements has already thrown up an unexpected name. TEAMtalk report that Liverpool have identified Burnley defender Maxime Esteve as a potential replacement for Konate.

Esteve only arrived at Turf Moor last summer from Montpellier for £10.3 million and endured relegation in his first Premier League campaign. Yet his performances stood out in a struggling side, enough for Liverpool, Chelsea and Crystal Palace to be credited with interest in the French centre-back.

Burnley, resigned to losing him in the upcoming window, are already planning their own response. Middlesbrough captain Dael Fry has been earmarked as the ideal replacement at the heart of their defence, a move that underlines how one free transfer at the top of the game can send ripples right down the ladder.

Konate’s departure leaves a sizeable hole at Anfield and hands Real Madrid another powerful piece for a squad already brimming with talent. Liverpool now have to answer the only question that matters: can they turn a shock exit into the starting point of a new back line, or will this be the move that lingers over their season?
