Jan Paul van Hecke Chooses Tottenham Over Liverpool
Liverpool’s search for the next pillar of their defence will not lead them to Jan Paul van Hecke. The Brighton and Hove Albion centre-back has set his sights on Tottenham Hotspur, drawn by the chance to reunite with Roberto De Zerbi in north London.
Anfield’s need is obvious. Ibrahima Konate is on his way out, Virgil van Dijk is edging into the final years of his peak, and while Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are expected to join Andoni Iraola’s senior squad next season, both are projects rather than ready-made leaders.
Van Hecke, 26, looked an ideal fit. Out of contract at Brighton in 2027 and coming off a season in which he emerged as one of the club’s standout performers, he has attracted a queue of admirers. According to Dutch outlet VI, Liverpool made direct contact with the Netherlands international in recent months, sounding out a move as they scoped the market for a long-term defensive solution.
They were not alone. Chelsea and Newcastle United have also monitored him, with several Premier League clubs tracking his progress as he grew into a central figure on the south coast. As VI put it, Brighton’s “absolute star player” had been on the radar of England’s elite.
The race, though, has tilted decisively in one direction.
Tottenham have accelerated their pursuit in recent weeks and are preparing a third bid for Van Hecke, having already agreed personal terms with the defender. Spurs see him as a natural addition to Ange Postecoglou’s back line and, crucially, De Zerbi’s presence has shifted the balance of power in the chase.
Van Hecke flourished under the Italian at Brighton and, according to reports, left talks with his former coach “enthusiastic” about the project being built in north London. That connection has proved decisive.
“Van Hecke himself has therefore made up his mind: it has to be Tottenham,” VI reports.
Interest from elsewhere remains, particularly from the clubs named in the British press, but the player’s stance is now clear. He wants Spurs. Tottenham, sensing the opening, are pushing to wrap up the deal quickly.
The timing matters. With the World Cup looming, Van Hecke is keen to head into the tournament with his future settled, free from the noise and uncertainty that can cloud a player’s focus. Spurs are working to ensure the transfer reaches its final stages before the Netherlands kick off, giving him both clarity and the security of what VI describe as a “top transfer”.
Inside the Dutch camp, the move is already a topic of conversation. Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been doing his bit behind the scenes, gently nudging his compatriot towards north London.
“I did talk to Jan Paul briefly about Tottenham. I think it is a good step for him,” Van de Ven said, underlining how highly he rates the potential signing.
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman views the situation through a different lens. International coaches often dread transfer sagas during major tournaments, and Koeman is no exception.
“Ideally, I would prefer a player to have peace of mind regarding his club,” he said on Sunday. “And that there is clarity about the future. But I cannot stop it.”
So Liverpool, having made their move, now look set to miss out. Tottenham, armed with De Zerbi’s pull, Van de Ven’s encouragement and Van Hecke’s own conviction, are closing in on a defender who appears convinced his next step lies in north London, not on Merseyside.
If Spurs get this over the line before the World Cup, they will not just have secured a key piece for their back line. They will have landed a player who has already decided where his future belongs.
