Kaizer Chiefs Lead Maxwele Transfer Battle – Madlala's Decision Looms

The transfer window only opens on 1 July, but the first major battle between South Africa’s giants is already deep into stoppage time. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are circling the same prize: 25-year-old Golden Arrows midfielder Maxwele.

For now, Chiefs have landed the first blow.

Chiefs strike personal terms – but hit an Arrows wall

According to well-connected Kaizer Chiefs insider Innocent Mkhize, Amakhosi have already agreed personal terms with Maxwele as they move to inject fresh energy into their midfield for the new campaign. The player is on board. The numbers work. The intent is clear.

What’s missing is the only signature that really matters right now – Golden Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala’s.

Mkhize indicates that while Chiefs have done their homework and secured an understanding with Maxwele, Madlala is leaning in a different direction. Her preference, he says, is to see the midfielder head to Orlando Pirates rather than make the switch to Naturena.

That single stance turns a near-done deal into a high-stakes arm wrestle. It also sets up another classic off-field showdown between the country’s two biggest clubs, both long-time admirers of a player who offers far more than just industry in the middle of the park.

Why Maxwele has the big guns circling

Maxwele’s rise has not been straightforward. After Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025, he arrived at Golden Arrows as a free agent, a useful player suddenly thrown into uncertainty. He responded with the kind of season that forces scouts to refile their reports.

In his first campaign with Arrows, the Mthatha-born midfielder became a regular feature, racking up 23 league appearances and adding more minutes in cup competitions. Across all tournaments, he chipped in with three goals and one assist – modest numbers on paper, but only part of the story.

Coaches talk about his relentless work rate. Opponents feel his aggressive pressing. Teammates lean on his ability to carry the ball through midfield and turn defence into attack in a few decisive strides.

He can operate centrally, where the traffic is thickest, or drift into wider attacking zones to stretch a back line. That versatility, paired with his engine, makes him a natural fit for any side looking to raise its intensity and dynamism.

For a rebuilding Chiefs, he looks like a cornerstone. For Pirates, he looks like a perfect addition to an already ambitious squad. For Arrows, he is both an asset and a bargaining chip.

A deal agreed, a decision delayed

Right now, the picture is clear but not settled. Chiefs have, by all accounts, won the race for Maxwele’s agreement on a personal level. The player is ready to wear gold and black.

But the move only becomes real when Arrows and Madlala decide they are willing to cash in – and on which terms, and to which rival.

As the transfer window gathers pace, the spotlight will not just fall on Maxwele’s next club, but on how hard Chiefs push, how strongly Pirates respond, and how firmly Madlala holds her line.

In a market where every marginal gain matters, which badge will Maxwele be kissing when the new season kicks off?
