Laois Faces London in Tailteann Cup Clash

Laois will cross the Irish Sea next as the Tailteann Cup moves into the teeth of summer and the stakes harden. Justin McNulty’s side, fresh from a sharp 1-23 to 0-19 win over Wicklow, have been paired with London in Round 2A after Monday’s draw.

It’s a tie laced with danger. London smashed four first-half goals in a ruthless dismantling of Waterford on Sunday. If Laois looked slick and controlled in their opener, they now meet a team that clearly prefers chaos and cut-throat finishing.

Offaly rewarded, but with a sting in the tail

Offaly’s impressive victory over Clare in Ennis has earned them a home draw, but the prize comes with a twist: they must face the winner of Down v Leitrim.

Conor Laverty’s Down host Leitrim, managed by fellow Mourne man Steven Poacher, on Saturday evening in Newry. The rivalry in the dugout is obvious, and the consequences are stark. Win, and it’s a trip to Offaly in Round 2A. Lose, and it’s straight into the survival fight of Round 2B with a home tie against Carlow.

One game. Two very different paths.

Goals galore and fine margins

Antrim’s opening chapter in this year’s competition was wild. Mark Doran’s side rattled in 6-17 against Carlow, yet still only escaped after extra-time with three points to spare. A scoreline like that usually signals a procession. Instead, it was a reminder that the Saffrons, for all their attacking flair, still walk a tightrope.

They now meet Tipperary in Round 2A. Tipp had to withstand a late surge from Sligo to get through, clinging on as the clock drained away. Antrim bring firepower; Tipperary bring resilience. Brewster Park may host another epic, but this one goes to Antrim’s chosen ground.

The final Round 2A fixture sends Wexford, Division 3 finalists, up to Fermanagh. Brewster Park will stage that one, with Fermanagh eyeing the chance to turn home advantage into real momentum.

Last-chance saloon in Round 2B

Round 2B is where the safety net disappears. Lose, and you’re gone.

Clare, beaten 1-17 to 1-14 by Offaly on home soil, stay in Ennis and will welcome Longford. It’s familiar ground but a very different mood: no room for error, no time for slow starts.

Wicklow, stung by that heavy loss to Laois in Aughrim, stay put as well. They host Limerick, who themselves were well beaten by Wexford in Round 1. One of them will steady the ship; the other will see their summer cut short.

Waterford, hammered by London’s goal rush, at least get the consolation of home advantage against Sligo. Sligo pushed Tipperary right to the brink but ran out of time. Now they must prove that late fight wasn’t a one-off.

The final Round 2B tie goes to the loser of Down v Leitrim, who will have home advantage against Carlow. For Carlow, who lived through that 6-17 Antrim onslaught and still forced extra-time, it’s another trip into hostile territory with their season on the line.

The road ahead

All Round 2A and 2B fixtures will be played on 23 and 24 May, with the first-named teams at home in every tie. New York, as ever, wait in the long grass, entering at the preliminary quarter-final stage.

By the end of those two days, the Tailteann Cup field will look very different. Some counties will have carved out a real shot at silverware. Others will be left wondering how quickly a summer can disappear.
