Liverpool's Goalkeeping Future: Iraola and Alisson's Defining Conversation
Liverpool are bracing for a decisive conversation between incoming head coach Andoni Iraola and Alisson that could define the club’s goalkeeping future – and perhaps Juventus’ as well.
Iraola era begins with a dilemma
Arne Slot believed he would be leading Liverpool into next season. He had a Premier League title in his pocket, delivered in his first campaign, and the sense that the hierarchy stood firmly behind him.
That illusion vanished on Saturday.
An end-of-season review, led by Fenway Sports Group powerbrokers Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes, ended with Slot’s dismissal. The Dutchman had lost the backing that matters most at Anfield: the fans’. Once that slipped, FSG did not hesitate.
Attention has already turned to Iraola. Liverpool plan to accelerate talks with the Basque coach in the coming days, aiming to seal his appointment before the World Cup kicks off on June 11. Hughes knows exactly what he is getting. He was the man who brought Iraola to Bournemouth in July 2023 and remains one of his strongest advocates.
Yet before Iraola can shape Liverpool’s future, he must confront a pressing issue from its recent past: Alisson.
Alisson ready to tell Iraola: ‘I’m done’
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Alisson intends to tell Iraola directly that he considers his Liverpool career over. For Juventus, Slot’s sacking has reopened a door they feared was closing.
The Italian side have been circling for months. The same report states that Alisson has already reached an agreement in principle with Juve on a three-year deal, with an option for a fourth season. For a club seeking a long-term No 1 with Champions League pedigree, it is a rare opportunity.
Liverpool have, to this point, blocked his exit. The stance has been firm, and consistent with what has already emerged this week. But everything now hinges on Iraola’s verdict and how it aligns with Hughes’ broader squad plan.
If Iraola decides that Giorgi Mamardashvili is the man to build around, or pushes for another new first-choice keeper, the dynamics change instantly. In that scenario, Liverpool’s resistance to a sale could soften and Juventus’ long pursuit might finally be rewarded.
A dressing room losing its spine
Letting Alisson go would not be a routine decision. It would be another fracture in the spine of a dressing room already braced for upheaval.
Liverpool are preparing to say goodbye to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson this summer, two modern greats and leaders in their own right. Ibrahima Konate has confirmed he will leave on a free transfer after contract negotiations collapsed. Experience, personality, and institutional memory are draining from the squad all at once.
That is one reason Liverpool have been so reluctant to sanction Alisson’s departure. He is not just a world-class goalkeeper; he is a reference point, a standard-setter, a voice that carries weight.
But he is also a player with his own priorities. Alisson wants clarity, and above all, certainty. He does not want to share the role or enter a battle for minutes with Mamardashvili or anyone else. Juventus are offering what Liverpool, under a new coach, may not be able to: a guaranteed No 1 shirt and a central role in their rebuild.
If Iraola cannot promise the same, the pressure from the player’s side will only intensify.
Verbruggen on the radar, Salah heir in the works
Liverpool have not walked into this situation unprepared. On May 15, they identified Brighton & Hove Albion’s Bart Verbruggen as a potential successor to Alisson. Young, highly rated, and comfortable with the ball at his feet, he fits the profile of a modern Liverpool signing and would give Iraola a goalkeeper to grow with.
The club’s recruitment work does not stop there. While Alisson weighs his future, Liverpool are pushing hard to secure their preferred replacement for Salah. The idea is clear: if icons are leaving, their successors must arrive quickly, decisively, and on the front foot.
So the stage is set.
A new coach about to walk through the door. A world-class goalkeeper ready to say he wants out. Juventus waiting, contract terms already mapped out. And a Liverpool hierarchy trying to rebuild a squad while keeping its core intact.
When Iraola and Alisson finally sit down, the outcome of that conversation will echo far beyond one position on the team sheet.
