Liverpool Reject Bayern's Interest in Rio Ngumoha
Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Bayern Munich’s interest in Rio Ngumoha – and made it clear they do not intend to budge an inch.
The 17-year-old winger, fresh from a breakout 2025/26 campaign and a first senior England cap, has become the latest teenage obsession for Europe’s elite. Reports last week claimed Bayern were preparing a major move to prise him from Anfield, with suggestions the German club had already made headway with the player’s camp.
Inside Liverpool, that talk has gone down like a lead balloon.
‘Absolutely no chance’ he leaves
Journalist Lewis Bower, speaking to the BBC, relayed the strength of feeling from within the club after consulting a trusted insider in academy circles.
“I do have a particularly well-placed person in academy football at a consultation, somebody who works in sports consultation,” he said, explaining the source of his information before stressing the stance he had been given.
“I believe he said to me it’s from the best possible source, so take from that what you will. I’d never tweet anything that I didn’t believe to be true, but yeah, it stands by absolutely no chance of that happening.”
No chance. Not this summer. Not on Liverpool’s watch.
The message tallies with what Anfield sources have been saying privately since the Bayern links first surfaced: Ngumoha is not for sale, at any price, and the club are furious that suggestions of an agreement with the player’s representatives have been allowed to circulate.
Anfield outrage at Bayern links
TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey reported last week that Liverpool are “deeply unhappy” with claims Bayern have already agreed terms with Ngumoha and his camp, insisting there has “never been any doubt” over the winger’s long-term future on Merseyside.
Inside the club, the mood has been described as one of “outrage” at the narrative emerging elsewhere. The hierarchy believe the noise around Bayern misrepresents both their position and the reality of the situation.
Bailey notes that Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany is a confirmed admirer of Ngumoha’s talent, but there is confidence at Liverpool that the Bundesliga champions will not cross the line by making an illegal, under-the-radar approach.
Admiration is one thing. Encroachment is another. Liverpool are ready for the former and on high alert for the latter.
From Chelsea prospect to Anfield priority
Ngumoha’s rise has been rapid but carefully managed. Signed from Chelsea in 2024, he penned a three-year contract in September 2024, tying him to Liverpool until 2028. Under current rules, that is the maximum length available to a 17-year-old.
Last season he turned those early promises into something more tangible: three goal contributions in just 551 Premier League minutes, flashes of a fearless wide player who looks at home on the biggest stage. Inside the club, he is viewed as one of the most exciting youngsters on the books and a key part of the next Liverpool side, not just the next Liverpool squad.
That is why, as the transfer noise has grown louder, Liverpool’s response has hardened. They are not debating exit strategies. They are planning his future.
New deal already on the horizon
Liverpool always intended to revisit Ngumoha’s contract once he approached his 18th birthday. The Bayern links have not created that plan; they have simply thrown a spotlight on it.
Ngumoha turns 18 on August 29. Once he does, the three-year cap on his deal disappears, and Liverpool will move to offer an upgraded contract on significantly improved terms, reflecting his rise in status and the expectation that he will see far more first-team minutes in the coming season.
Bailey reports that the club’s focus is “entirely” on securing the teenager’s long-term future. The current agreement, signed in 2024, has always been seen internally as only the first step – a holding framework until a longer, more lucrative deal becomes possible under regulations.
The next step comes after his 18th birthday. Liverpool intend to take it quickly.
For Bayern, and any other watching superclub, the message could hardly be clearer: this is not an unsettled prodigy waiting to be plucked away. This is a cornerstone of Liverpool’s rebuild, locked into their plans and about to be rewarded accordingly.
The battle for Ngumoha’s signature may have been talked up across Europe. At Anfield, they are acting as though it is already over.
