Manchester United's Surprise Move for Brentford's Igor Thiago
Manchester United’s rebuild under Michael Carrick is starting to take shape, and it could take a sharp turn up front.
In a summer already mapped out for heavy investment in midfield and at left-back, United have identified Brentford’s Igor Thiago as a surprise centre-forward target – a move that would cut across their original plan to recruit only a seasoned, older striker to guide Benjamin Sesko.
Thiago is 24. He is not the veteran presence United’s recruitment team had in mind. But he scores – relentlessly.
Carrick era backed by major spend
INEOS are preparing to arm Carrick with around £200m for new signings as they look to turn last season’s third-place finish into something more sustained: a side that can go deep in the Champions League and live with the pace of a Premier League title race.
The spine of the team is under review.
Casemiro is leaving, Manuel Ugarte can go if the right offer lands, and United want at least two new central midfielders, possibly three. A deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is racing towards completion and is set to become the first signing of the Carrick era, a clear marker of where United believe the battle will be won.
But the work does not stop in midfield.
United also want a left-back and another centre-forward, despite spending £73m only last summer on Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko. The idea is not to replace him, but to protect him – and push him. An experienced forward was supposed to arrive to share the load, offer guidance, and make sure the 23-year-old is never left to carry the attack alone.
Then Igor Thiago entered the conversation.
An ‘exception’ for a ruthless finisher
Journalist Ben Jacobs reports that United are ready to bend their own rules for Thiago, treating him as an “exception” to their hunt for an older, more seasoned No 9.
The numbers explain why.
Thiago finished last season as the Premier League’s second-highest scorer, behind only Erling Haaland, with 22 goals in 38 games for Brentford. Across his senior career, he has 90 goals for club and country. He is only three caps into his Brazil career but has already forced his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad and has matched that tally with two goals in three international appearances.
United have had a close-up view of the damage he can do. Thiago has scored twice in three games for Brentford against them, a return that has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.
Jacobs told The United Stand that United have started to scan the market for forwards in the “old and more experienced” bracket, but with one or two clear exceptions – Thiago among them – if Joshua Zirkzee leaves.
And that is the key.
Zirkzee exit could unlock Thiago bid
For Thiago to walk through the door, someone else almost certainly has to walk out.
United are open to allowing Joshua Zirkzee to move on, with a return to Serie A already floated. The club hope that any fee raised for the Dutchman can be recycled straight into a move for Thiago.
That is where the plan meets resistance.
Brentford know exactly what they have and are under no pressure to sell. They are expected to demand around £70m for Thiago – a figure designed to test United’s resolve and, if possible, scare them off entirely.
Yet within Old Trafford, there is a belief that this is a rare chance worth chasing.
Sporting chief Jason Wilcox is understood to view Thiago as an investment that fits both the present and the future, and Jacobs claims he is prepared to “go the extra mile” to get a deal done if the conditions fall into place.
Competition and a rising profile
United will not get a clear run at him.
Transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey has previously reported Chelsea’s interest in Thiago, and the striker’s situation at Brentford is not as locked down as his contract length might suggest. He signed a new long-term deal earlier this year, but Bailey believes it is far from guaranteed that he will start next season at the Gtech Community Stadium.
His World Cup involvement looms large. A strong tournament with Brazil would only harden Brentford’s stance and inflate the fee, while adding more heavyweight suitors to the queue.
United’s plan for the summer is already aggressive: reshape the midfield, reinforce the left side of defence, support Sesko with another forward.
The question now is whether they are willing to tear up their own template for one of the league’s most ruthless finishers – and whether selling Zirkzee will be the domino that lets them try.
