Manchester United's Midfield Overhaul: Pursuing Fernandes and More
Manchester United’s summer rebuild is starting in midfield, and the message from Old Trafford is clear: strengthen decisively, but don’t get fleeced.
With West Ham’s relegation confirmed, United are preparing to formally declare their interest in 21-year-old starlet Fernandes, a player who has quickly moved from scouting notes to serious target. United want three midfielders in this window, and the youngster has climbed towards the top of that list.
United believe Fernandes will be available and are working to understand the conditions of any deal. Their internal valuation sits around £50 million. The question now is whether that number even gets them to the table.
West Ham, facing the financial and sporting realities of life outside the Premier League, are not about to roll over. Figures close to the London club expect them to push aggressively for more suitors, hoping to ignite a bidding war that drives the price far beyond United’s comfort zone. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, and West Ham will not mind that one bit.
Ederson deal sets the tone
While the Fernandes pursuit gathers pace, United are closing in on what they see as a template deal for the summer.
Talks for Atalanta midfielder Ederson are progressing, with an early summer agreement increasingly likely. A fee below £35 million is viewed as achievable, and inside Old Trafford that number is seen as the kind of value they want to replicate across their recruitment.
United’s hierarchy are determined not to overpay. That stance is already shaping the rest of their shortlist.
Carlos Baleba, admired for his profile and potential, remains firmly on the radar. But Brighton’s £100 million valuation is a major obstacle, and there has been no indication so far that the south-coast club are willing to soften their stance. If that doesn’t change as the window draws nearer, United are prepared to walk away and focus on more realistic options rather than get dragged into another inflated auction.
Alternatives under scrutiny
The scouting net is wide, and the names under consideration reflect that.
Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has impressed decision-makers, his blend of composure and versatility making him an intriguing option. Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, despite his complicated recent spell, is another player whose talent has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is admired as well, though any move there would hinge on price and availability at one of Europe’s most powerful clubs.
All three sit in the “admired but conditional” category. United’s new transfer approach is built on discipline: the right player, at the right number, or not at all.
Rashford’s future clouds wide plans
While the midfield plan sharpens, the picture on the left wing is far less clear.
United had been weighing up a move for a left-sided attacker, but those plans may now be pushed back as Marcus Rashford’s future hangs in the balance. His situation is complicated by Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barcelona, a transfer that leaves Rashford’s own prospects in Catalonia uncertain.
Even so, there is still hope on the player’s side that a permanent switch to Barca can be revived. The Spanish giants retain an interest, but any serious move will hinge on the finances involved and how Gordon’s deal shapes their budget and priorities.
For United, that uncertainty has consequences. Committing big money to a new left-sided forward while Rashford’s next step remains unresolved would be a gamble. So they wait, reshaping the heart of their team first, while one of their most high-profile players weighs up a future that could yet pull him away from Old Trafford altogether.
United want three new midfielders, one disciplined strategy, and no more costly mistakes. Whether that blend of ambition and restraint can survive a volatile summer market is about to be tested.
