Manchester United's £80m Move for Mateus Fernandes as Carrick Rebuilds
Manchester United’s summer plan under Michael Carrick is starting to take shape – and it is not a cheap vision.
Having already pushed through an agreement worth around £38.8million for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, United are now circling their next major target, with an £80m price tag looming over the deal they want to do.
This is a rebuild with Champions League football in mind, not a gentle tune‑up.
Midfield overhaul after Casemiro exit
Casemiro’s departure has ripped a sizeable hole out of United’s midfield. Experience, presence, defensive nous – all gone in one move. Carrick, a former midfield metronome himself, has no intention of leaving that gap unfilled as United prepare for their return to Europe’s elite competition next season.
Ederson is one piece of the answer. The Brazilian has reportedly agreed terms to swap Bergamo for Old Trafford, giving United energy, ball-winning and drive in the centre of the pitch. But the club’s hierarchy know one signing will not be enough.
They want another. And they are looking to the Premier League for it.
United move for Mateus Fernandes
Attention has turned to West Ham playmaker Mateus Fernandes, one of the few bright sparks in a season that ended in relegation at the London Stadium.
United have already made contact with the Hammers over a possible deal, according to ESPN. The message back is clear: Fernandes will not come cheap.
Relegation is expected to blow a £100m hole in West Ham’s finances, forcing them towards a series of sales. The Times report that the club have set an £80m valuation on the Portugal international after an eye-catching debut campaign in England.
United are not alone in the chase. Arsenal have also been linked with a move, drawn by the 22‑year‑old’s blend of vision and composure between the lines. But with Ederson poised to arrive, United can offer Fernandes the prospect of joining a new-look midfield built to compete on multiple fronts.
If they meet West Ham’s price, the outlay on two midfielders alone would nudge towards £120m – a clear signal that Carrick and the club’s hierarchy see the centre of the pitch as the heart of this new project.
Maguire’s next chapter – behind the mic
While United reshape on the pitch, one of their senior figures is preparing for a very different role this winter.
Harry Maguire has missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup, his second straight absence from a major tournament after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024. For a defender who once stood as a cornerstone of England’s back line, it marks a stark shift in his international fortunes.
But Maguire will not be disappearing from view. Instead, he is set to step into the studio during the tournament, joining Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on The Rest is Football podcast.
The trio of former England internationals will broadcast from a studio overlooking Times Square in New York across 40 episodes, with Maguire adding the perspective of a current player who has lived both the highs and the scrutiny of the modern game.
As United chase big-money signings and a new identity under Carrick, Maguire’s move into punditry raises its own question: is this just a World Cup cameo, or the first glimpse of where his career is heading once the Old Trafford chapter finally closes?
