Marcus Rashford's Barcelona Future in Doubt Amid Transfer Talks
Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona future has been thrown into doubt just as it seemed settled, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa now circling as the Spanish giants hesitate over a permanent deal.
Gordon deal changes the picture
Rashford’s loan spell at Barcelona has been productive. Fourteen goals, fourteen assists, and long stretches where he looked fully at ease in Hansi Flick’s attacking structure. Flick has pushed hard for the club to exercise their option to buy. The numbers are modest by modern transfer standards: a €30m clause, roughly £26m, and a clear pathway for a player who has rediscovered some sharpness in Catalonia.
Yet the mood in the boardroom has shifted.
Barcelona are closing in on Anthony Gordon after hijacking Bayern Munich’s move for the Newcastle winger. A £70m agreement, rising to £80m with add-ons, has been struck with Newcastle, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Gordon is due to land in Barcelona today for medical tests.
That move has complicated everything for Rashford. Decision-makers at the club, according to The Athletic, now see his permanent stay as “more complicated” in light of Gordon’s imminent arrival. Flick still wants him. Others are not convinced.
Clock ticking on €30m option
Manchester United have set a clear deadline: June 15. Trigger the €30m option by then, or the deal is off. Barcelona, for their part, are reluctant to commit to the full fee and would prefer to explore another loan arrangement. So far, United have shown no appetite to renegotiate. The option is there to be used, not reshaped.
Sources close to Rashford, as reported by The Athletic, say no definitive decision has been communicated and that they still see a chance he remains at Barcelona next season, even with Gordon arriving. His preference is clear: his dream is to stay under Flick.
The problem? United do not want him back.
With Michael Carrick preparing for his first full season in charge, there is no desire at Old Trafford to reintegrate Rashford into the squad. INEOS will have to find a buyer if Barcelona walk away from the permanent deal.
Premier League sharks start to circle
That uncertainty has opened a small but significant window. The Daily Mail report that Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa have all discussed a move for Rashford as they weigh up attacking reinforcements.
No bids, no formal negotiations. But conversations are happening. For clubs at that level, a 26-year-old England international available at €30m, with proven output at both Premier League and Champions League level, is a rare opportunity.
United, though, are keeping other options on the table. A potential swap deal with AC Milan, involving Rafael Leao heading to Old Trafford, has been mooted. Reports in Italy have suggested Milan are prepared to cut Leao’s asking price from £86m to £43m, a figure that would immediately attract United’s hierarchy. For now, it remains just that: an idea, not an active negotiation.
Barcelona talks to decide everything
The coming days are decisive. The Daily Mail say talks are scheduled this week between Barcelona and Manchester United to settle Rashford’s fate. Either the Catalan club commit to the €30m clause, or United pivot fully to alternative solutions.
Flick has made his stance plain inside the club. He wants Rashford as part of his front line next season, even with Gordon in the mix. Others in the hierarchy are weighing squad balance, wage structure and the impact of an £80m Gordon package on their already strained finances.
If Barcelona blink and walk away, the dynamic changes overnight. Rashford becomes a live target for Arsenal, Spurs and Villa, and a potential makeweight in any high-profile swap United pursue.
For now, everything hangs on one decision in Barcelona: is Marcus Rashford worth €30m in a summer already dominated by Anthony Gordon’s arrival?
