Michael Kayode Shines in Brentford's Premier League Victory Over Tottenham
Michael Kayode needed only a split second. That was enough to deepen Roberto De Zerbi’s early-season nightmare at Tottenham Hotspur.
Three minutes into the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Brentford already in command, the Italy U21 defender ghosted into the danger area as Spurs failed to clear a corner. The first ball was dealt with. The second phase wasn’t. Kayode stretched out a leg, diverted it goalwards, and Brentford were 3-0 up in their opening Premier League match of the 2026-27 campaign.
Spurs sunk. The home crowd roared. De Zerbi stared into the distance.
Kayode’s strike capped a ruthless Brentford display that had begun to dismantle Tottenham long before the interval. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the first half, before Vitaly Janelt doubled the lead, punishing a visiting side that never looked settled under their new head coach.
The third felt symbolic. An Italian full-back, still waiting for his senior national-team debut, scoring against an Italian coach and with Italy international Sandro Tonali lining up on the other side. On the touchline, De Zerbi. On the pitch, Tonali. In the spotlight, Kayode.
For the 22-year-old, it was a milestone moment. This was only his second goal in the Premier League, his first having arrived in a 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers back in March. Brentford clearly saw enough then. Earlier in the summer he signed a long-term extension, tying himself to the Bees until 2032 and signalling that his development would run through west London for the foreseeable future.
At international level, Kayode has already become a fixture with Italy U21, earning 10 caps and featuring in their UEFA Under 21 EURO qualifying campaign. He was part of the side that celebrated a third goal against North Macedonia U21 in Empoli in March 2026, a snapshot of a young core pushing towards the senior setup.
Yet the call from the full national team has not arrived. Not yet.
Performances like this, on the Premier League’s opening weekend and against a club of Tottenham’s stature, will only amplify the noise around him. Brentford have locked down his future. The question now moves to Italy: how long before the Azzurri do the same?
