Rafael Leao Signals Interest in Manchester United Transfer
Rafael Leao has nudged the door to Old Trafford a little wider – and he’s done it with his own words.
The AC Milan forward, one of Serie A’s marquee attractions since arriving from Lille in 2019, has openly name-checked Manchester United as a club he admires, sharpening the focus on a transfer race that now looks increasingly defined.
“I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol,” Leao said in a recent interview, while also acknowledging he keeps an eye on Arsenal. For a player who has long spoken of the Premier League as a dream destination, it sounded less like a casual remark and more like a deliberate signal.
From €100m man to cut-price prize
Milan once treated Leao as untouchable. At his explosive peak, the Rossoneri quoted suitors north of €100m for their jet-heeled winger. The numbers backed it up: 80 goals and 65 assists in 291 games across all competitions, a highlight reel full of surging runs and decisive finishes that led British GQ to brand him a “global superstar”, and saw respected voices such as Max Allegri and CBS Sports describe him as “world-class”.
That era feels distant now. After a disappointing campaign and a refusal to commit to a new deal, Milan have shifted their stance. The asking price has reportedly dropped to around €50m (£43.5m). For Europe’s elite, a luxury signing has suddenly become a market opportunity.
Manchester United have already been placed firmly in the conversation. Intermediaries offered Leao to the club at the start of May, with his camp understood to be actively working on a move away from San Siro.
United, Fenerbahce… and a clear preference
The landscape is still fluid, but some contours are clear. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, United and Fenerbahce are currently showing the strongest interest. On paper, that is a straight choice between the Premier League’s global glare and the passionate, but less commercially powerful, stage of the Turkish Super Lig.
If Leao gets any say in the matter, the path seems obvious. A switch to Old Trafford would allow him to follow the trail blazed by his idol Ronaldo and finally test himself in the league he admits he watches “a lot”. Fenerbahce remain a heavyweight in their own right, but they cannot match the Premier League’s reach, nor United’s historical pull for a player who has grown up with Ronaldo as a reference point.
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, both offered the chance to move for Leao, are currently focused elsewhere. That leaves United with a cleaner run than many expected for a player of his profile.
INEOS, swap ideas and the left-wing puzzle
Behind the scenes, the new United regime under INEOS is already sketching out how a deal might work. Reports in Italy suggested at the end of April that United could offer Milan up to three players as part of a package to drive the fee down further, a tactic that would help them stay within financial constraints while still landing a marquee attacker.
Leao would not arrive in isolation. United are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson in a £38m move, and the Brazilian has been widely tipped as the club’s next Serie A import. The suggestion is that Leao could be the one to follow, turning United’s gaze firmly towards Italy as they try to reshape a misfiring squad.
The left flank is a particular area of focus. Alongside Leao, United are tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they assess options for that side of the attack. Each brings a different profile, but none carries the same instant, global recognition as the Milan star.
That matters at Old Trafford, where footballing logic and commercial weight often intertwine. A player already branded a “global superstar” fits both columns neatly.
Rashford question lingers in the background
All of this plays out against the uncertain backdrop of Marcus Rashford’s future. United’s stance on the academy product’s possible return to prominence has become more complicated amid fresh talk of a permanent move to Barcelona, with “complications” emerging around any potential transfer.
The more that situation drags on, the more urgent United’s search for a new left-sided talisman becomes. Leao, with his blend of pace, power and end-product, offers a ready-made answer – if the price is right and the structure is workable.
For now, the Portuguese forward remains a Milan player, the subject of offers and overtures rather than formal bids. But he has already done his part to turn up the heat. He watches the Premier League. He likes Manchester United. He grew up idolising Ronaldo.
The next move belongs to INEOS.
