Rory Finneran Receives First Republic of Ireland Call-Up

Rory Finneran’s rise has reached its first major landmark. The Newcastle United midfielder has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the friendly against Grenada on Saturday, his first taste of full international football.

The 18-year-old has linked up with Heimir Hallgrimsson’s group at their training camp in Murcia, Spain, as Ireland tune up for the game at Estadio Nueva Condomina (17:00 BST). For a player who only joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, it is a rapid step into the spotlight.

Finneran has been on the radar for some time within the Irish setup, having represented his country at under-17 and under-19 level. Now he finds himself promoted earlier than expected, his opportunity shaped by a flurry of late withdrawals.

Joel Bagan of Cardiff City and Ipswich Town winger Kasey McAteer have both been ruled out through injury, forcing Hallgrimsson into a reshuffle and opening the door for the teenager.

Umeh's Withdrawal

One new face arrives, another is lost. Benfica attacker Jaden Umeh, who had been in line for his own senior debut after receiving a first call-up, has been pulled out of the squad by his club.

The timing of the fixture has complicated everything. Because the friendly falls outside Fifa’s designated international window, clubs are under no obligation to release their players. Benfica have chosen to keep hold of Umeh, and they have their reasons.

Their under-19s face a must-win clash with Famalicao on Saturday as they chase qualification for the Uefa Youth League. Umeh is central to that push; he underlined his importance with two goals in a 6-2 victory over UD Leiria on Sunday. With so much riding on the weekend, Benfica want him on the pitch, not on a plane.

Hallgrimsson acknowledged the situation, outlining how the scenario had been on the horizon for some time.

“Benfica are still fighting in their U19s to be in the Uefa Youth League,” he said. “The plan was for them to have secured that by now, but unfortunately, results this weekend didn't go their way, so Jaden still has one more game to play.

“We knew beforehand that this was a possibility, even if it was unlikely.

“It is unlucky for him that the results went that way, as we were looking forward to working with him, but we understand the club's position and will have to wait for a future window to bring him into the environment.”

So Umeh must wait. Finneran does not.

While one promising attacker stays in Portugal to chase youth honours, a young midfielder steps into a senior international camp in Spain, suddenly part of Hallgrimsson’s plans for Grenada. For Ireland, and for Finneran, Saturday in Murcia now carries a different kind of significance.
