Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes Resolve Feud Through Honest Conversation
Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes have quietly put their mini-feud to bed, and they did it the old‑fashioned way: a phone call and an honest conversation.
The former Manchester United captain revealed on the Stick to Football podcast that he and the current skipper spoke at length after Fernandes publicly challenged Keane over a misquoted story about the Premier League assist record.
From “lie” to “lovely chat”
The row began when Keane, speaking on The Overlap last month, claimed Fernandes had once admitted choosing to pass rather than shoot while chasing the Premier League assist record. The problem? Fernandes had actually said the opposite in the original interview.
The Portugal international pushed back on The Diary of a CEO, accusing Keane of telling a “lie” and saying he wanted to speak directly to the 54-year-old to clear the air.
That call finally happened.
“There was a reaction after what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat… I called him and we had a lovely chat,” Keane said.
He could not resist a trademark jab as he relayed the story.
“He apologised, I forgave him, no problem,” he joked, before stressing the tone of the exchange. “But no, it was a good chat… a lovely chat about a bit of everything.”
The conversation, Keane suggested, went beyond one disputed anecdote.
“When we do podcasts or games, sometimes you think you say something afterwards and you communicate something and it doesn't come across properly, so people get upset and he said he wanted to talk to me.
“And we had a nice, mature conversation. It was lovely. A lovely chat.”
For a pundit who has built a second career on sharp edges and unforgiving standards, Keane also made it clear he still prefers distance from the modern dressing room.
“I like having boundaries with players. I don't want to be speaking to players every few weeks or their agents, I don't want to go down that road,” he said. “But every now and then a player might reach out, so it was important I spoke to him.”
The respect, though, is obvious.
“There has been lots going on and lots reported. He's obviously a big player for United, I'm an ex-United player and the idea of this communicating and having a proper conversation, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully he did as well.
“Nice chat about a bit of everything and I felt better afterwards.”
Fernandes the record-breaker – and United’s focal point
All of this plays out against the backdrop of Fernandes’ record-breaking season. The Manchester United captain set a new Premier League benchmark for assists, surpassing the previous best of 20 set by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
His numbers underline his status as the side’s creative heartbeat and, increasingly, the figure around whom United’s attack is built. His “legacy campaign”, as it has been described, has naturally prompted wider discussion about his influence at Old Trafford and what comes next in his career.
United’s hierarchy know exactly what they have. Which is why, as they look to reshape the squad, the club are again turning to a Fernandes – this time in midfield reinforcements rather than the man already wearing the armband.
United eye Mateus Fernandes as midfield rebuild gathers pace
Manchester United are doing background work on West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, viewing a deal as realistic after the Hammers’ relegation.
Sky Sports News understands West Ham value the Portuguese midfielder at around £80m and are under no pressure to sell, having only signed him last summer for an initial £38m. The price tag is firm, the stance clear, but his situation has inevitably alerted clubs with Champions League ambitions and a need for midfield quality.
For United, midfield remains a priority area to strengthen this window. The pursuit of Mateus Fernandes fits that brief: a player in his prime years, proven in the Premier League environment, and potentially available if the numbers fall into place.
As one Fernandes settles a dispute with a club legend and cements his own place in the record books, another could yet be drawn into the Old Trafford orbit. The question now is whether United’s interest turns into a bid strong enough to test West Ham’s resolve.
