Advancing to the Knockout Round

This World Cup features 48 teams, expanding the knockout rounds. Instead of starting with a round of 16, it will begin with 32 teams. The top two from each group, totaling 24 teams, move on. Then, the eight best third-place teams across all groups also qualify.

Tiebreakers Explained

If teams tie on points in their group, a set of rules decides their ranking.

  1. First, points earned in matches among the tied teams are checked.
  2. Next, goal difference in those matches is considered.
  3. Then, the total goals scored in those matches.

If still tied, the next steps look at all group matches:

  1. Overall goal difference
  2. Total goals scored
  3. Team conduct score based on yellow and red cards

If no resolution emerges, FIFA World Rankings decide the order.

Ranking Third-Place Teams

To rank third-place teams for knockout qualification:

  1. Points gained in group matches
  2. Goal difference in group matches
  3. Goals scored in group matches
  4. Conduct score

FIFA rankings serve as a final measure if ties persist.
