Abdukodir Khusanov Signs Five-Year Deal with Manchester City

Manchester City have moved quickly to lock down one of their emerging pillars in defence, handing Abdukodir Khusanov a new five-year contract that underlines just how highly the club rate the Uzbekistan international.

At 22, Khusanov is still at the front end of his career, but his impact since arriving from Lens in January 2025 has been anything but tentative. He walked into a dressing room stacked with serial winners and did not flinch. By the end of last season, he had medals to show for it: the FA Cup, the League Cup, and a second-place finish in the Premier League.

For a player who only a year ago was testing himself in Ligue 1, it has been a rapid climb.

“This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City,” Khusanov said, the relief and ambition wrapped together in a few simple lines. He talked about enjoying “every minute” in Manchester and feeling himself “growing and learning a lot as a player.”

The ink on the contract is barely dry, yet Khusanov already has his next target in sight: convincing new manager Enzo Maresca that he belongs in the starting XI every week.

“I have a new challenge now, which is to impress Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that,” he said.

It is a clear statement. This is not a young defender content to sit on a long deal and wait for minutes. He wants to be central to Maresca’s rebuild, not a peripheral figure rotated in when the schedule becomes congested.

Maresca, known for his emphasis on structured build-up and technical defenders, inherits a centre-back who fits the modern template: comfortable on the ball, physically imposing, and already hardened by top-level football with both club and country.

From Tashkent to the Top End of the Premier League

Khusanov’s journey has moved fast. Thirty caps for Uzbekistan and a World Cup on his CV — where he played every minute of their three Group K matches — have given him the sort of big-stage experience many 22-year-olds simply do not have.

City saw that profile and moved early. Now they are doubling down.

Director of football Hugo Viana did not hide the club’s excitement over the extension.
