Alex Scott has nudged the door open for Manchester United. Now it’s up to Old Trafford to walk through it.

Midfield rebuild gathers pace

United’s midfield is already being ripped up and reassembled. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have checked in, giving Michael Carrick fresh legs and different profiles in the centre of the pitch. He still wants one more. A third piece for his engine room.

Scott is firmly in that frame, one of the more concrete options on the table. AS Roma’s Manu Kone is another name under consideration, but the dynamic playmaker at Bournemouth has long been admired at Old Trafford.

Arsenal have also been tracking both players, yet their gaze keeps drifting back to Bruno Guimaraes, who remains their priority. If the Gunners stay locked on the Brazilian, United could find themselves with a relatively clean run at Scott or Kone, especially with several top clubs open to doing business in midfield this summer.

Bournemouth dig in – but numbers tempt

Bournemouth are not pushing Scott towards the exit. Far from it. They’ve tried to protect their asset, offering improved terms on a deal that already runs to 2028. His camp has pushed them back.

Reports of a release clause have surfaced, but with no fresh agreement signed, the situation is simple: anyone wanting Scott will have to pay. The expectation is a fee in the region of £60 million.

In the current market, that figure hardly feels outrageous. Triple-figure moves elsewhere this summer – for Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Morgan Rogers – have dragged the bar upwards. Against that backdrop, £60m for a 22-year-old with Scott’s ceiling starts to look less like a gamble and more like a calculated investment.

Chelsea are watching too. Morgan Rogers is on his way to Stamford Bridge and the London club also like Scott, with Enzo Fernandez’s future again being weighed up after his standout World Cup. If Chelsea step in, United’s margin for manoeuvre narrows.

Kone, Adams and shifting targets

Kone, another option on United’s list, underlined his credentials on the biggest stage. He made four starts for France at the World Cup, often ahead of Aurelien Tchouameni, a long-standing United target who is now expected to sign a new deal at Real Madrid. That tournament exposure has only strengthened Kone’s profile.

Back at Bournemouth, Scott is not the only one catching glances from Manchester. Tyler Adams has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, though interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has cooled, hinting at a tightening shortlist rather than a scattergun search.

United’s recruitment team know they cannot get every call right. But they also know they cannot afford to get this one wrong.

Attack on pause as Rashford returns

Up the pitch, the picture is more tangled. Crysencio Summerville and Iliman Ndiaye are both on United’s radar as potential attacking additions. For now, those plans sit in neutral.

The reason is Marcus Rashford.

The 28-year-old is set to be reintegrated into Carrick’s squad after loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona. Rashford pushed for a permanent move to the Camp Nou, but that path has all but closed with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi already arriving there this summer. His future at United will heavily influence whether the club push harder for another forward or divert funds into other areas.

If Rashford finds his edge again in pre-season, the urgency for a new attacker eases. If he doesn’t, the transfer board changes quickly.
