Andrea Pirlo Set to Lead the Azzurri as New Head Coach

Andrea Pirlo is poised to take the reins of the Azzurri, with multiple Italian outlets reporting that the former midfield artist has agreed a four-year deal to become Italy’s new head coach.

According to Football Italia, Pirlo has shaken hands on a contract worth €1.5 million per season, a modest figure by elite international standards and a world away from the sums discussed with other candidates. La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sky Sport Italia and Calciomercato all report that the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is preparing to make the appointment official on Monday or Tuesday.

This is not the appointment the federation first imagined. It is the one they have moved decisively towards.

Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola were the primary targets. Both said no. Their refusals forced the FIGC to pivot quickly, and they did so by turning to a man who has long been viewed as the natural heir to Italy’s great playmaking tradition.

His appointment would cement a sweeping reshuffle at Coverciano. Technical power now sits squarely in Maldini’s hands, with Pirlo the most visible symbol of a new era the FIGC hopes will restore clarity and identity to the national side.

One Contract to End, Another to Begin

There is still a formality to clear before the FIGC can pose Pirlo in front of the tricolore.

The former Juventus and Milan maestro remains under contract with Dubai United FC in the UAE, where he has been head coach since last summer. That deal must be terminated by mutual consent before Italy can officially present him as CT.

The timeline is tight. The FIGC has scheduled an internal meeting for Tuesday, and that gathering is widely expected to double as the stage for Pirlo’s unveiling if all paperwork falls into place in time.
