Andrea Pirlo Withdraws from Italy Manager Role Amid Betting Company Controversy

Andrea Pirlo has officially announced he is no longer a contender for the position of head coach of the Italian national football team. The former midfielder for Juventus and AC Milan expressed frustration after his potential appointment was derailed due to concerns over his commercial links with a Russian betting company.

From Leading Candidate to Withdrawal

Once seen as the leading candidate to lead the Azzurri's rebuilding process, Pirlo had become the top choice after big names like Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti declined the role. Reports suggested that he had agreed to a four-year contract worth 1.5 million annually. That plan has now fallen apart, forcing the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) to rethink their approach just when it seemed they had found their man. The 47-year-old's candidacy had strong backing from FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and special advisor Leonardo, both eager to bring their former AC Milan teammate on board.

The Betting Sponsorship Issue

The stumbling block was Pirlo's position as a global ambassador for the Russian betting company Fonbet. Given Italy's strict laws against gambling advertising, this connection created a conflict for a public role linked to the state. Pirlo addressed the situation in an Instagram Story statement after hearing he was no longer being considered for the coaching job.

"Out of respect for the institutions, the federation and everybody involved, I have chosen to remain silent until now. However, after learning last night that I am no longer a candidate for the Italy national team head coach position, I feel it is necessary to clarify a few points."

He added that he had watched the debate unfold with bitterness and highlighted that throughout his career—both as player and coach—he always acted within the law and honored contracts. The partnership causing controversy started during his work in the United Arab Emirates and was purely commercial and sporting in nature.

Pirlo Denies Political Links to His Partnership

The 2006 World Cup winner rejected any political interpretation of his relationship with the betting firm, criticizing attempts to frame it as such.

"Attributing political meaning to this collaboration means attributing convictions to me that I have never expressed and that I do not hold. It is regrettable that a decision based on sporting grounds was quickly dragged into a public debate that ended up assigning motives and intentions to my name that never existed. My love for Italy does not depend on a job."

Future of the Italian National Team

The sudden end to Pirlo's candidacy leaves Maldini and the FIGC in a tricky spot. The federation had planned a meeting expected to unveil the new coach but must now restart their search just before the UEFA Nations League campaign begins.

Despite his disappointment, Pirlo maintained good relations with the federation's leadership.

"I wish to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the respect and faith they showed in me. I know their competence, seriousness, and the love they have always dedicated to Italian football."
