Arsenal’s pursuit of elite wide firepower is running into a familiar obstacle: Real Madrid don’t let their crown jewels go easily.

Vinicius Junior, long admired in north London and briefly dangled as a tantalising possibility with his contract ticking down, is now expected to stay put at the Bernabéu. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Madrid are close to tying the Brazilian to a new long-term deal after what he described as “positive talks”, with a verbal agreement in its final stages and José Mourinho pushing from inside the club to keep him.

So Arsenal pivot. And quickly.

Barcola emerges as the contingency plan

With the Vinicius door almost shut, attention has turned sharply to Paris and Bradley Barcola, the Paris Saint-Germain forward who has already attracted heavyweight interest across Europe.

Arsenal have identified the France international as a serious alternative, viewing him as the kind of high-ceiling wide attacker who can keep their Premier League title defence on track and sharpen their Champions League edge. Barcola’s refusal to sign multiple contract extensions at PSG has only heightened the sense that a move could be on the cards, inviting suitors to test the French champions’ resolve.

Liverpool have moved first. The Merseyside club are understood to be in active negotiations with PSG, and for now they are widely seen as the frontrunners for his signature. Arsenal, then, are not just chasing a player; they’re chasing a deal that is already in motion.

To stand any chance of hijacking it, they will have to pay. PSG are holding firm at a valuation in the region of KSh 23.6 billion (£140m), a figure that instantly narrows the field to only a handful of clubs. Matching that price would be a statement as much as a transaction.

Their recruitment drive has focused on players who can tilt big games and stretch defences in one-on-one moments. Vinicius Junior fit that brief perfectly; Barcola, who impressed on the biggest stage at the 2026 World Cup, offers a different profile but the same kind of game-breaking potential.
