Arsenal’s summer has flickered into life. Now they are preparing a move that would ignite the entire Premier League market.

The club are stepping up their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, with a £70 million bid being readied for the Brazil international, according to The Sun. It is a bold play for one of the division’s most complete midfielders and a direct challenge to a Newcastle hierarchy adamant they do not want to sell.

Arsenal test Newcastle’s resolve

Guimaraes sits right at the top of Mikel Arteta’s wish list. Arsenal want a new midfielder to drive the next phase of the project, and the 26‑year‑old is the chosen centrepiece.

Newcastle’s stance is clear: they refuse to part with their captain. He is central to their plans and a symbol of their recent resurgence. But Arsenal believe every stance has a breaking point.

Indirect talks have already taken place through intermediaries. Those early feelers suggested the Premier League champions were initially prepared to go to around £60 million. Now, the London club are ready to push that figure to £70 million in an effort to force Newcastle to make a decision.

The pressure on Tyneside may not only be financial. The report claims Guimaraes has informed Newcastle officials that he wants the move to the Emirates Stadium. If that position holds, the dynamic of the negotiations changes. A player of that stature asking to leave can accelerate discussions very quickly.

Quiet start, busy week

For a while, Arsenal’s window felt subdued. That changed in 24 hours.

The club completed the £34 million signing of Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis on Thursday, adding direct running and end product to the wide areas. They also finalised a £34 million deal for defender Piero Hincapie, who impressed last season while on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. Arsenal remain keen on Julian Alvarez. His work rate, pressing and versatility would fit seamlessly into Arteta’s system. But Atletico Madrid are holding firm, both publicly and in private, insisting the Argentine striker is not for sale. That resistance will not stop Arsenal asking the question, yet it sets up a stand-off that could drag deep into the window.

Beyond north London, another potential domino is wobbling. Bradley Barcola may leave Paris Saint‑Germain during the current window, and Liverpool are currently viewed as the closest to striking a deal. Any move there would reshape the attacking market again.

For Arsenal, though, the headline act is clear. They have already reshaped their squad at the edges. Now they are going after the heart of it.
