If Madrid do land Diomande, the picture on the flanks becomes crowded. Both he and Vinicius are right-footed wingers who can operate from the left, and both expect to start. Something would have to give, unless Madrid choose to fund the teenager’s arrival by cashing in on the Brazilian who helped drag them through so many big nights.

Diomande’s versatility complicates and enriches the debate. For RB Leipzig last season, he primarily worked from the right, stretching defences and driving inside. Yet during his previous spell in La Liga with Leganes, he was used almost exclusively on the left. Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae also leans on him from that flank, where he shone during their four matches at this summer’s World Cup.

That is precisely the territory Vinicius has made his own since leaving Flamengo for Madrid. Cutting in from the left, he has produced 128 goals in 376 appearances across all competitions, numbers that sit alongside the trophies and the decisive moments in Europe. Which is why Arsenal’s interest, even at this early stage, carries weight. They are not alone in looking at the shifting pieces around Madrid’s attack, but they are one of the few clubs with both the ambition and the project to tempt a player of Vinicius’ stature if the door opens.
