Arsenal's Owners Challenge Fans for New Era of Success
Arsenal’s owners have thrown down a fresh challenge to the club and its supporters on the eve of their Premier League title defence, insisting last season’s glory must be the start, not the peak.
On the night Arsenal open the new campaign against Coventry City, co-chairs Stan Kroenke and Josh Kroenke used their programme notes to look back on what they called a season “etched in our hearts” – and then pushed the focus straight back onto winning more silverware.
A year that changed everything
The Kroenkes hailed 2025/26 as a defining chapter in the club’s history, a campaign that ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League crown and saw Arsenal crowned FIFA Women’s World Champions.
They lingered on the images that followed the title win, especially the moment the trophy was lifted at Selhurst Park. That snapshot, they said, only became truly special because it was shared with Arsenal fans scattered across continents.
From north London streets to gatherings around the globe, the celebrations were held up as proof of the club’s reach and the emotional pull of its success. The owners spoke of scenes that cut across borders, cultures and generations, and of a fanbase that found pride and belonging in the same colours.
The title parade through north London earned special mention too. For the Kroenkes, it felt like a healing march as much as a victory lap, a day that reconnected club and supporters after the sting of defeat in the Champions League final.
No time to stand still
The nostalgia stopped there. The tone quickly hardened.
While last season’s memories will be cherished, the owners stressed that Arsenal cannot afford to bask in them. “Champions don’t stand still, they evolve and keep moving forward,” their message read, underlining a clear intent to turn one landmark year into a sustained era of success.
They pointed to the summer as evidence that the club’s momentum has not stalled. Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi and David Raya returned from international duty as World Cup winners with Spain, adding another layer of prestige to the squad. Arsenal’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City was flagged as another marker that the team remains on the front foot.
Change in the squad, and behind the scenes
The note also acknowledged the churn that comes with elite competition. Departures for Leandro Trossard, Christian Norgaard, Jakub Kiwior, Karl Hein, Rosa Kafaji, Jenna Nighswonger and Laila Harbert were all recognised, a nod to players who contributed to the journey but move on as the squad is reshaped.
Behind the scenes, Pascal De Maesschalck has arrived as the club’s new Academy Director, a key appointment as Arsenal look to keep a steady flow of talent coming through Hale End and beyond.
On the recruitment front, the owners highlighted an aggressive summer rebuild across both the men’s and women’s teams. Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Illan Meslier and Piero Hincapie have come through the door, alongside Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler, Lisa Baum, Isabella Damm and Misa Rodriguez. It is a list that underlines the breadth of Arsenal’s ambition, from midfield control to defensive depth and attacking spark.
A rallying cry before kick-off
As the champions prepare to walk out and begin the defence of their Premier League title, the message from the top of the club is unambiguous: thank you, but don’t stop now.
The Kroenkes closed with a direct address to the “Arsenal family” – those inside the stadium and those watching from afar – praising their loyalty and asking for the same relentless energy that powered last season’s surge.
Their hope is simple and bold: that when this campaign ends, Arsenal are once again celebrating “wildly” and pushing “one (or more) better across our teams.”
The trophy has been lifted. The parade is over. The owners have drawn the line in the sand. Now comes the hard part: proving that last season was the beginning of an era, not the end of a wait.
