The headline, of course, is Bruno Guimaraes. The $101 million signing is a statement as much as a solution, a midfielder capable of dictating games and changing the rhythm of this team. He may only feature briefly against Como, but every touch will be studied. Every angle of his partnership potential with Rice and Odegaard will be imagined.

On the flanks, new signing Christos Tzolis has already caught the eye. Direct, sharp, and lively on the left, he has injected some urgency into Arsenal’s wide play at a time when Saka has been absent and others have been playing catch-up.

There are still issues. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are injured and set to miss the start of the season, ripping out two important pieces of Arteta’s defensive structure. No wonder preseason has looked shaky at the back. Yet the depth of this squad, especially in midfield and attack, offers a cushion few clubs can match.

Trevoh Chalobah has just arrived from Chelsea to bolster that back line, adding Premier League experience and physical presence. Ahead of him, Alvaro Morata leads the line, a forward whose movement and work rate will test whatever combination Arteta fields in central defence. Nico Paz adds creativity and threat in attack, another piece in a side that looks increasingly built for European nights rather than survival battles.

For Fabregas, this is more than a sentimental return. It is a chance to measure his emerging project against a club and a manager operating at the very top of the modern game.

What Wednesday really means

Kick-off at 2:30pm ET on Wednesday at the Emirates will be streamed on Arsenal’s YouTube channel, but the real audience Arteta cares about sits in his own dressing room.

He needs sharper pressing, cleaner build-up and a back line that stops creaking under pressure. He needs Guimaraes to start knitting patterns, Tzolis to keep stretching defenses, and the returning internationals to show they can flip the switch from summer mode to season mode in a matter of days.

Como, with their defensive record and growing confidence, are no soft touch. They will happily turn this into a tactical examination rather than a training exercise.
