Arsenal's Pursuit of Left-Sided Stars: Barcola or Vinicius Jr

Arsenal’s search for a new left-sided star is starting to look like one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer.

On one track, there is Bradley Barcola, the Paris Saint-Germain winger they have scouted closely. On another, far more glamorous one, sits Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr – the headline name at the top of Arsenal’s wish list for the left flank.

Both pursuits tell a story about where the Premier League champions want to go next.

Barcola chase complicated by Liverpool and PSG’s price

Arsenal’s interest in Barcola is not new. The 23-year-old France international has been monitored as part of a wider search for forward reinforcements, with the club determined to add pace and incision to the front line.

But the landscape has shifted.

Liverpool are now widely reported to be leading the race for Barcola and, according to L’Equipe, have opened talks with PSG over a deal. The French champions, though, are driving a hard bargain. They value Barcola at around €170 million (£145m) – a figure that has stunned suitors and set the tone for what could become a drawn-out negotiation.

Liverpool, for their part, are pushing that valuation towards roughly £85m. The gap is huge. The clock is ticking. The saga threatens to run right up to the end of the window.

If Arsenal do decide to step more firmly into the fight for Barcola, they know the timeline is likely to be dictated by those same hard numbers in Paris. For now, they remain among the clubs credited with an interest, watching a market that looks anything but stable.

Vinicius Jr: the marquee ambition

While Barcola’s future is being haggled over in boardrooms, Arsenal’s clearest internal decision is about the profile they want on the left wing.

Vinicius Jr is the main target for that position.

The Brazilian has become one of world football’s most devastating wide forwards at Real Madrid, and his name at the top of Arsenal’s list underlines the scale of their ambition. The left side has been ringed in red as an area needing reinforcement, and the club’s recruitment plans are being built with that in mind.

Whether Real Madrid are willing to entertain any move is another matter entirely, but inside Arsenal the direction of travel is obvious: they want a game-changer out wide, not just another option.

Trossard gone, Martinelli uncertain, Tzolis in

The urgency on that flank is shaped by what is already happening in the squad.

Leandro Trossard is on his way out, with Arsenal having agreed a £17m deal to sell the Belgian to Besiktas earlier this month. A versatile, reliable squad player is leaving, and with him goes a chunk of depth on the left.

Gabriel Martinelli’s future, too, is described as uncertain. For a club that has just won the Premier League, that is a significant question mark in a key attacking position.

Arsenal have moved to address part of that by signing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a £34m deal. The Greek forward adds another young, aggressive option to Mikel Arteta’s front line and fits the club’s age profile and development model.

But if Trossard departs and Martinelli’s situation remains unresolved, Tzolis alone does not close the chapter. It opens a new one, and it heightens the need for a proven, elite left winger – hence the focus on Vinicius Jr and the continued monitoring of Barcola.

Champions still building

So far this summer, only two new faces have joined the squad that lifted the Premier League trophy last season: Tzolis and goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Meslier’s arrival strengthens the last line of defence. Tzolis adds freshness and competition in attack. Yet the feeling around the Emirates is that the real shape of this Arsenal side for the coming campaign is still being carved out.

With the transfer window open until 1 September, there is time for more movement, but not a lot of margin for error. Arsenal are trying to thread a tight needle: protect the core of a title-winning squad, refresh key areas, and, if possible, land a statement signing on the left wing.

Barcola or Vinicius Jr? A drawn-out negotiation in Paris or a blockbuster attempt in Madrid? The next few weeks will reveal how bold Arsenal are prepared to be – and how far they are willing to go to stay ahead of the chasing pack.
