Raul Rosas Jr. Shares His Thoughts on the Shocking UFC Vegas 121 Finish Against Raoni Barcelos

At UFC Vegas 121, Raul Rosas Jr., 21, earned a fifth-round knockout over veteran Raoni Barcelos, 39, securing his first main event victory. The finish, officially recorded as a slam knockout, was far more alarming than typical, as Barcelos appeared to lose consciousness during the takedown before even touching the mat. He was stretchered out and taken to the hospital, where the UFC later confirmed he was stable, responsive, alert, and able to move fully.

A Moment of Fear and Prayer

On Monday's episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, Rosas described his reaction to the frightening scene. "For a second, I didn’t know if he died, to be honest," Rosas admitted. "But when I calmed myself down a little bit and was just looking, I checked if he was breathing and saw his body breathing, so I was like, OK, he’s not dead, for sure." This brought him some peace, though he stayed silent, praying that Barcelos would wake up and reunite with his family.

"Death was the biggest — and worst-case — concern for everyone watching," Rosas said. "It was scary because of that, but to be honest, yes, I was happy about my performance on the side."

Respect Despite the Outcome

Rosas believes Barcelos will feel down about losing but hopes he appreciates the effort both fighters gave. "We both went out there and gave it our all, willing to do whatever to get our hand raised that night," he said. Rosas has reached out to Barcelos but hasn’t heard back yet. Barcelos reportedly regained consciousness the night of the fight and could move his limbs. Statements have since come from Barcelos and his coaches.

Puzzling Ending After a Grueling Fight

The bantamweight battle lasted five intense rounds, and Rosas is as puzzled as anyone about what caused the sudden stoppage.

• Rosas: "From my side, I didn’t hit his head. You can see that on the video, and I even watched the replay. I want to see if he remembers and what he can say about that. He’s the one who knows better than anybody."
• About round four: "I caught my breath a little because I was chilling. He was on my back trying hard to finish me with a submission. He was squeezing the whole time but gasping for air. When he returned to his corner between rounds, he was a bit wobbly from tiredness."

Rosas thought he rested more on the floor than Barcelos did, who exerted a lot of energy grappling. Heading into the final round, Rosas pushed the pace, sensing Barcelos’ body might have shut down due to exhaustion.

Rosas also recalled landing a light punch to Barcelos’ head before going for the decisive takedown. "I don’t know if that could have done it. When I got ahold of him, he felt so weak, like his body was done. I got even more wind going for the legs and had a victory feeling, like I already won the fight." He took Barcelos down and finished the fight there.

He found it unfortunate that Barcelos was out upon hitting the mat, realizing Barcelos may have lost consciousness before the takedown. "Maybe that’s why he felt so weak, because he was already out."

Barcelos Was Ahead on the Scorecards

The stoppage was especially tough on Barcelos because he was winning comfortably on points. All three judges had him ahead before the fight ended.

Rosas acknowledged the pressure after Barcelos dominated the fourth round, which one judge scored 10-8 in Barcelos’ favor.

• Rosas on scoring: "I was down going into the fifth, but in my head it was different. I’m fighting, not watching from the outside. My mind had a different scoring."
• "I honestly thought I was losing going into the fifth because I believed I won Round 1, Round 2 could have gone either way, and he clearly took Rounds 3 and 4. It could have been 2-2, but the fourth was all his."
• "That’s why I had to finish it in the fifth. I didn’t want doubt about winning or losing."

Rosas Builds on UFC Success

With this win, Rosas improved to 7-1 inside the UFC and 13-1 overall. It marks his second victory over ranked opponents since joining the promotion in late 2018 at age 18.
