Arsenal Set to Sign Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle Coach Acknowledges Loss

Arsenal are on the brink of unveiling Bruno Guimaraes, with the formality of an announcement now the only thing missing from one of the summer’s headline moves.

According to Eduardo Burgos of AS, the Brazilian has completed every step of the process: medical done, contract signed, photos taken in Arsenal colours. The club are expected to make it official on Friday.

The sense of inevitability only grew when Newcastle United’s new head coach, Matthias Jaissle, spoke publicly. He did not say the word “Arsenal”, but he hardly needed to.

“I met him quickly, but the decision was already made,” Jaissle admitted. “It was a nice conversation. He’s a fantastic player and a great human being.

“It’s tough, but for him now it’s the next challenge and we need to deal with it at a later stage.

“We trust the players who are here already, but we will also see some changes.”

With that, Newcastle’s most influential midfielder of the last two seasons all but walked through the exit door.

Arsenal are set to pay £75m for Guimaraes, a fee that underlines both their ambition and their belief that he can reshape their midfield. He will sign a four-year deal running to 2030, placing him at the heart of Mikel Arteta’s project for the rest of the decade.

The Brazilian is expected to wear the number 39 shirt in north London, the same number he has carried at various stages of his career with Athletico Paranaense, Lyon and Newcastle. It is a small detail, but one that speaks to a player who knows exactly who he is and how he wants to be seen.

There is, however, a wrinkle. Arsenal technically already have a 39: academy midfielder Louie Copley has used it in pre-season. History suggests that will not be a problem.
