The World Cup has barely cooled and already Europe’s biggest clubs are scrambling to patch holes, seize opportunities and outmanoeuvre rivals. At Arsenal, the urgency is real. In Barcelona, the planning is ruthless.

Arsenal turn to a familiar face

Arsenal are weighing up a move for John Stones on a free this summer, a deal that would have sounded fanciful a year ago but now speaks to necessity as much as ambition.

William Saliba’s back problem, managed through the World Cup and aggravated in France’s semifinal defeat to Spain, threatens to sideline the defender for months. Mikel Arteta cannot afford to gamble on his fitness with a title push and Champions League campaign looming, so the club have started to look for experience rather than potential.

Stones fits that brief. The 32-year-old England international left Manchester City at the end of his contract earlier this month and, crucially, he is no stranger to Arteta. The pair worked together at City, where Arteta saw first-hand how Stones could step into midfield, build play under pressure and handle high-stakes games.

This is not a marquee long-term signing. It is a short, sharp fix for a specific problem. Arsenal need someone who can walk into a dressing room chasing trophies and not flinch. Stones, available without a fee, ticks enough boxes to be considered a realistic option.

Barcelona’s striker puzzle

In Catalonia, the search for a new No. 9 continues to revolve around one name: Julián Álvarez. Atlético Madrid’s Argentina forward remains Barcelona’s top attacking target, but the club are working on escape routes if that move stalls.

According to TEAMtalk, early interest in Premier League forwards João Pedro of Chelsea and Eli Junior Kroupi of AFC Bournemouth has cooled, with both deals viewed as unlikely. So the gaze has shifted.

Dusan Vlahovic and Darwin Núñez have emerged as serious alternatives. Vlahovic is a free agent after leaving Juventus, a powerful, penalty-box striker who brings Serie A and European pedigree without a transfer fee. Núñez, currently with Al Hilal and expected to move on this summer, offers a more chaotic, high-energy profile, stretching defences and attacking space.

Neither man has displaced Álvarez at the top of Barcelona’s list, but the club are doing what they did not do often enough in recent years: scanning the market early, building parallel plans, refusing to be left stranded if their first choice slips away.

Atlético push to reunite with Nico González

Atletico Madrid know exactly what they want in wide areas, and they’ve already had a season-long audition.

Nico González spent last season on loan from Juventus, making 37 appearances and scoring five goals across all competitions. Diego Simeone liked what he saw. The 28-year-old Argentina winger worked, pressed, and bought into the Atletico grind.

The loan, though, did not trigger the permanent clause. The agreed terms were not met, so González is back at Juventus and officially off the Rojiblancos’ books.

That has not killed Atletico’s interest. Far from it. They want him back, but not at the previously agreed €30 million. The message is clear: Simeone values him, the club want him, yet they will not be bounced into paying a number they no longer consider realistic.

Inter circle Djed Spence

In Italy, Inter Milan are moving with intent down the flanks.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Inter are set for talks with Tottenham Hotspur over full-back Djed Spence. The Nerazzurri are prepared to offer €35 million for the versatile defender, whose World Cup performances for England caught the eye.

The fee on the table is significant. The question now sits with Tottenham. Do they see Spence’s value rising after his international displays and hold out for more, or do they bank a substantial sum and move on?

Inter, for their part, are not expected to chase the price up the ladder. Their stance looks firm: €35 million is a serious bid, and they are unlikely to go much higher.

Chelsea’s record-breaking Rogers move

Chelsea, meanwhile, are about to rewrite the record books again.

The club have agreed a £117 million deal with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers, a fee that will make the 23-year-old the most expensive British player in history. Arsenal had tracked Rogers closely and were ready to increase their interest, but refused to meet Villa’s valuation.

Chelsea did not hesitate once they signalled they were in the same financial ballpark as Villa. Negotiations accelerated after England’s World Cup semifinal exit to Argentina, and the London club moved decisively to close the deal.

For Arsenal, it is another reminder of their financial ceiling. For Chelsea, it is another bold stroke in an era defined by aggressive, high-stakes investment.

Premier League and beyond: the chasing pack

Around them, the market churns.

Liverpool are positioning themselves for a midfield reshuffle, with a potential battle against Manchester United for Roma’s Manu Kone reported by Football Insider. On the left side of defence, Liverpool are also keen on Borussia Dortmund’s Daniel Svensson, though Arsenal could yet complicate that pursuit, according to Caught Offside.

Chelsea are not finished either. TalkSPORT reports that they have opened talks with Crystal Palace over Maxence Lacroix. The 26-year-old centre-back will not be easy to prise away, with Palace’s hierarchy expected to drive a hard bargain.

On the wings, Liverpool and Arsenal are once again set to collide, both having made contact over RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, per Ekrem Konur. The winger’s future remains unresolved, and the Premier League’s pull is only growing stronger.

At Manchester City, the stance is more defensive. Football Insider reports that the club are unlikely to entertain offers for Phil Foden, despite links suggesting the 26-year-old could be tempted by a new challenge. City, it seems, are in no mood to lose one of their key attacking pillars.

Leão tempted, Modric and Acerbi extend the clock

In Serie A, the theme is continuity laced with temptation.

Rafael Leao’s future at AC Milan remains uncertain, with Gazzetta dello Sport suggesting the forward is tempted by a move to the Premier League. Aston Villa have been floated as a possible destination, though there is no clarity yet on whether either side will push to make it happen. The interest is there; the commitment, not yet.

Elsewhere in Milan, experience is being rewarded. Luka Modric is closing in on a new deal with AC Milan until 2027, with the club confident of keeping the 40-year-old midfielder for another year, according to Nicolo Schira. Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town are testing their ambition with an €8 million bid for Union St. Gilloise goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, says Sacha Tavolieri. The 26-year-old is open to the move, but there is still a gap between the clubs’ valuations.
