Arsenal have moved Jules Kounde to the top of their defensive shortlist, sensing an opening at Barcelona just as the Catalan club brace for more painful business in the final stretch of the window.

The London side, according to Sport, are tracking the Frenchman closely, aware that his situation at Barça is no longer as secure as it once looked. Kounde is back in pre-season, working as usual, but the ground is shifting beneath his feet.

Barcelona’s financial squeeze opens the door

Barcelona’s priority remains the balance sheet. They need salary cap room, and they are prepared to make big calls to get it. Ronald Araujo has already gone. Marc Casado is expected to follow for around €40 million. Those exits may not be the last.
