Aston Villa Signs Joao Gomes for £38m to Strengthen Midfield

Aston Villa have underlined their intent in the transfer market again, sealing a £38m deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as Unai Emery rebuilds the heart of his team.

The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m in add-ons, after Villa saw off strong interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side had tracked the 25-year-old closely, but once Villa moved decisively, the deal moved quickly. Gomes left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday, headed for a medical, and did not look back.

This is not an isolated splash. It comes less than 24 hours after Villa pushed through a club-record move worth more than £50m for Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to the Switzerland international and sending a clear message to their Premier League rivals. Two major midfield signings in as many days. Emery wanted a new engine room. He is getting one.

The urgency has a brutal context. Amadou Onana, a central pillar of Villa’s plans, is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup. Morgan Rogers, another midfield option, is set to depart with Villa having agreed a £117m deal with Chelsea. In a matter of weeks, Emery’s midfield core was ripped apart. Villa’s response has been to spend big and move fast.

Gomes brings Premier League know-how as well as energy. He made 41 appearances for Wolves last season as they crashed to the bottom of the table, a grim campaign that still showcased his resilience and work-rate in a struggling side. Since arriving from Flamengo in 2023, he has played 130 times for Wolves and scored seven goals, growing from an intriguing prospect into one of their most reliable performers.

For Wolves, his exit is another painful reminder of their position in the food chain. For Villa, it is an opportunity seized. They have plucked a proven top-flight midfielder from a rival, bolted him onto a squad already strengthened by Manzambi, and done it with weeks still left in the window.

Villa Park will expect these investments to translate into control, aggression, and depth in midfield. With Onana sidelined and Rogers on his way to Stamford Bridge, the stage is set for Gomes and Manzambi to reshape the way Emery’s side play. The money has been spent. The question now is how far this new-look midfield can carry Villa in a season of rising ambition.
