Barcelona's Summer Rebuild: Araujo to Liverpool, Jofre to Ajax

Barcelona are preparing to say goodbye to two players today, in a Monday that underlines just how quickly this summer’s rebuild is moving at the Camp Nou.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the board has already signed off on two offers, and the club is now set to make both departures official before the day is out: Ronald Araujo’s long-anticipated move to Liverpool, and the exit of 19-year-old full-back Jofre Torrents.

Jofre bound for Ajax, with a Barça safety net

Jofre will join Ajax Amsterdam, a move that fits a familiar pattern for Barcelona’s brightest academy products. The Dutch club get a highly rated left-back with room to grow; Barça keep a buy-back clause and, crucially, a measure of control over his future.

The deal was expected to be wrapped up on Sunday. Ajax, however, had their first match of the season, and the timing slipped. The paperwork waited. So did the announcement. That changes today.

While Michel Sanchez sent his squad to Udine on Saturday, Jofre stayed behind. He did not travel, a clear sign that his future lay elsewhere and that both clubs preferred to avoid any last-minute complications.

Ajax’s left flank puzzle

Ajax have already moved aggressively in the full-back market, bringing in Caio Henrique and retaining Owen Wijndal. Wijndal has no intention of leaving, which creates a crowded left side and a delicate balancing act for the Dutch side’s hierarchy.

That context explains Barcelona’s insistence on a buy-back option. Jofre is seen internally as a potential long-term full-back for the first team, and sporting director Jordi Cruyff is keen not to lose him outright.

The idea is simple: let him grow, but not too far from Barça’s reach.

One scenario on the table is a future step through La Liga. Cruyff views a move to a strong Spanish top-flight club such as Celta Vigo as an ideal bridge for Jofre, especially with Barcelona’s reserve team competing only in the second division. Top-tier minutes, higher pressure, and a style of football that mirrors what he would face if he returns to the Camp Nou.

For now, though, the next chapter is Amsterdam. Araujo heads to Liverpool, Jofre to Ajax, and Barcelona’s summer reshaping continues to gather pace—with one eye firmly on the present, and another on the possibility of calling a promising left-back home.
