Barcelona have circled around Lautaro before, only to be dragged back to reality by their finances. Each time the interest resurfaced, the numbers never quite added up. Now, with the Álvarez route blocked, the temptation to try again is obvious.

A different profile to Álvarez – and closer to Lewandowski

On pure profile, Lautaro might be an even better fit than many of the names floating around the market.

At 28, he is in his prime years. His record for Inter – 175 goals in 376 competitive matches – underlines a striker who knows his way around the penalty area and doesn’t need a preface or an explanation.

He is not as technically refined as Álvarez between the lines, not as naturally creative in tight spaces. But that is not the point. His strengths lie elsewhere: penalty-box instincts, sharp movement, aggression in duels, and the ability to compete physically and in the air.

In many ways, he is closer to Robert Lewandowski than to Álvarez. For Barcelona, that matters. Flick’s frontline is already stacked with technically gifted players who want the ball to feet, who like to come short and combine. Lautaro offers something more direct, more ruthless, more vertical.

He would not just replicate what is already there. He would change the texture of the attack.

The deal that won’t come cheap

Then comes the hard part. Inter Milan are not a selling club by obligation. They are expert negotiators by reputation.
