Barcelona Makes First Bid for Julián Álvarez as Summer Plans Intensify

Barcelona are wasting no time drawing the outlines of their next great forward line.

With the deal for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United all but wrapped up, the La Liga champions are now turning their full attention to their main centre-forward target: Julián Álvarez of Atletico Madrid.

Deco moves, Álvarez pushes

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are preparing their first official offer to send to Atletico for the Argentine striker in the upcoming window. The move follows a direct meeting earlier this week between Barça sporting director Deco and Álvarez’s agent, a sit‑down arranged with the help of Juanma Lopez.

The talks have come at a moment of clear rupture in Madrid. Álvarez has already told Atletico he wants to leave and has rejected the club’s proposal to renew his contract. The message from the player is unambiguous: his future lies away from the Metropolitano.

Barcelona intend to exploit that stance quickly. Their plan is to establish the framework of a deal well before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aware that a strong tournament from a 26-year-old forward entering his prime could trigger a bidding war across Europe.

A €100m ceiling meets a €150m wall

Inside the Camp Nou offices, Álvarez has been identified as the priority No. 9. But there is a line they insist they will not cross. Barcelona have set a firm internal limit of €100 million for the transfer.

Atletico see things very differently. They do not want to strengthen a direct domestic rival and are currently holding out for a fee in the region of €150 million. That gap sets up a tense negotiation, with both clubs braced for a drawn-out battle over the numbers.

The leverage may sit, at least in part, with the player. His desire to leave, already communicated to Atletico, could start to weigh on the Madrid club’s stance as the window progresses. A reluctant seller can quickly become a pragmatic one when a key asset pushes for the exit.

For now, Barcelona are readying that opening bid and preparing to sit across the table from Atletico. The first formal offer is coming. What follows could define not just their attack, but the balance of power at the top of La Liga for years to come.
