Barcelona Faces €16m Standoff Over Jorge Salinas

Barcelona have spent the summer circling Jorge Salinas. Racing Santander have spent the summer slamming the door.

The 19-year-old defender, fresh from an eye-catching Under-19 Euros with Spain, has turned from a quiet prospect into one of the most talked-about teenagers in the Spanish market. His rise has drawn more suitors into the chase, but one thing has not moved an inch: Racing’s price.

They want €16 million. Not a cent less.

A release clause and a standoff

Barcelona moved early. They tracked Salinas from June, liked what they saw, and quickly reached an understanding with the player over personal terms. On that front, they are covered.

The problem sits with Racing.

Before July, Barça and the Cantabrian club clashed over how to interpret the defender’s release clause. The Catalans backed off when it became clear there would be no “friendly” discount. Racing’s stance has only hardened since.

Salinas’ versatility at the back and his performances for Spain’s youth sides have convinced Racing they are holding a premium asset. They have planted their flag at €16 million and invited the market to take it or leave it.

“We have already been offered €14 million”

Speaking to SPORT, Racing sporting director Chema Aragon laid out the situation with striking clarity.

“We have already been offered €14 million and we said no,” he revealed.

He did not name the club behind that bid, but he did not need to. The message was aimed at all of them. Racing will not negotiate down from the clause.

Aragon repeated the line that has become the club’s mantra this summer.

“If someone comes, brings the €16 million and the player likes the club, he will leave,” he said.

Simple. Pay the clause, convince the player, and the deal is done. Try anything else, and Racing will walk away.

Barcelona’s offer falls short

Barcelona’s first proposal reflected both their admiration and their financial caution. The package was built around €6 million fixed, €2 million in variables, and the option to include a player on loan to sweeten the deal.

Racing barely blinked.

The newly promoted side are not interested in creative accounting or makeweights. They want cash, and all of it.

“It could be that we are interested in a player, but one thing will have nothing to do with the other. We are not going to mix the two operations,” Aragon insisted.

Any separate loan or signing will be treated as exactly that: separate. Salinas’ price remains ring-fenced.

No deadline-day discounts

Clubs often wait out sellers, hoping the pressure of the closing days forces a compromise. Racing are spelling out that this strategy will fail.

“Today he is only sold for €16 million. Tomorrow, if we can, for €16.1 million. The closer we get to the end of the market, the more demanding we will be,” Aragon warned.

That is not just posturing. Racing know exactly what they have. A 19-year-old Spanish defender, already shining at youth international level, under a clear release clause and with several clubs hovering. They see a rare opportunity and intend to squeeze every euro from it.

Barcelona’s dilemma

For Barcelona, the equation is awkward.

On one side, there is a young, highly rated defender they have monitored for months and already convinced on personal terms. On the other, a €16 million fee for a player who has yet to prove himself at the very top level, in a summer where every major outlay at Camp Nou is scrutinised.

The club remain keen on Salinas, but the current conditions push the move towards the “unlikely” column. Unless Racing soften their stance — and all public signs suggest the opposite — Barcelona will have to step back and watch.

That does not mean the story ends. Salinas will stay in Santander, step into a bigger role, and play out a season that could either justify Racing’s iron grip on his valuation or reshape it entirely.

For now, the message from El Sardinero is clear: if Barcelona truly believe he is worth it, they know the number.
