Barcelona's Striker Search Takes Hit with Joao Pedro's New Chelsea Contract

Barcelona’s striker search has taken another hit. One of the few realistic centre-forward options on their list is gone – and gone for a decade.

Chelsea confirmed on their official channels that Joao Pedro has signed a new contract running all the way to 2034, a statement of intent from the London club and a clear “hands off” message to any suitors. Among them: a Barcelona hierarchy already bracing for disappointment in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez.

Door slammed on Deco’s shortlist

Joao Pedro had been repeatedly mentioned in reports as one of the forwards under consideration by sporting director Deco as he looks to reshape Barcelona’s attack. The Brazilian’s profile fit the brief: mobile, clinical, and already proven at the highest level.

That possibility has vanished. Chelsea have locked him down long term, underlining just how central he has become to their project.

From Brighton signing to world champion

Joao Pedro arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025 and wasted no time turning potential into end product.

He scored in both the semi-final and final of the FIFA Club World Cup, striking twice against former club Fluminense to fire Chelsea into the showpiece, then finding the net again against Paris Saint-Germain as the Blues lifted the world title. The stage was global, the impact immediate.

He carried that form straight into his first full season in London. Across all competitions in 2025-2026, Joao Pedro hit 20 goals and finished the campaign as Chelsea’s Player of the Season, an award voted for by the club’s supporters. The fans made their verdict clear: this was their man.

Big club, bigger commitment

Speaking after signing the new deal, Joao Pedro made no attempt to hide what it meant to him.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future.”

The connection goes beyond the pitch.

“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I joined.”

And he left no doubt about where his focus lies heading into the new season.

“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals.”

Goals on every front

The numbers back up the rhetoric. After his Club World Cup heroics, Joao Pedro opened Chelsea’s 2025-2026 league campaign with the first goal of the season away at West Ham United, then delivered the only goal in a tight win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Europe told the same story. He scored twice as Chelsea beat Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, extending his scoring touch onto the continental stage.

For Chelsea, the message is simple: their emerging talisman is staying. For Barcelona, already wrestling with the complexities of a move for Julian Alvarez, one more avenue has just been firmly shut.
