Bardghji Faces Long Rehab After ACL Injury

The plan was clear. Train hard, stay fit, secure a move before the window closed. Instead, Barcelona winger Bardghji is facing months of rehab and a second major knee surgery before his 21st birthday.

Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that the Sweden international has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a devastating injury suffered during training on Monday. Medical tests have already been carried out and surgery is scheduled in the coming days. His season, and his transfer plans, have been ripped up in an instant.

From transfer talks to the treatment table

The timing could hardly be worse. Bardghji had entered pre-season with one eye on the exit door after talks with the club hierarchy and coach Hansi Flick. According to ESPN, Flick told the 20-year-old in frank terms that first-team minutes would be scarce at Camp Nou this year, with competition for attacking places intensifying.

So the message was simple: look for a new club.

Barcelona had already started to move in that direction. Bardghji was held out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a protective measure to avoid exactly the kind of injury that has now struck. Interest was arriving from across Europe, including from the Premier League, and there was an expectation that negotiations would pick up pace as the September 1 deadline drew closer.

Then came Monday’s training session. One movement, one twist, and everything changed.

A cruel repeat

This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this particular nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024. For any footballer, one ACL tear is a mountain. A second, in the same knee, at 20 years old, is a brutal test of resolve.

Barcelona signed him from Copenhagen last summer in a deal worth around €2 million, a smart, low-risk move for a club scouring Europe for young talent. Bardghji responded with 28 appearances across all competitions in his debut season, scoring twice. The numbers were modest, but he showed enough flashes to justify the investment.

Most of those minutes, though, came from the bench. And this summer, his route to the starting XI narrowed even further. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi pushed him down the pecking order, turning a difficult fight for game time into something close to an impossible one.

That is why a transfer made sense for everyone. Until his knee gave way.

Window closed, road ahead

With the summer window shutting on September 1, the injury has effectively locked Bardghji in Barcelona for the coming season. No club will take on a long-term ACL recovery on the eve of the campaign, and Barcelona know it. Any talk of an exit has stopped. The only plan now is surgery, rehabilitation, and patience.

He will remain in Barcelona for his recovery, working through the long, lonely months that follow such a serious injury. The gym instead of the pitch. The treatment room instead of the dressing room. While Gordon, Adeyemi and the rest of Flick’s forwards fight for minutes, Bardghji will be fighting simply to get back to where he was.

For a young winger who arrived in Spain to accelerate his career and was preparing for a new chapter elsewhere, it is a savage detour. The question now is not which league he will play in next, or which club will win the race for his signature.

It is whether he can come back from a second ACL tear in the same knee and reclaim the future that, only a few days ago, still felt firmly within his reach.
