Chelsea's Clear-Out Accelerates Under Xabi Alonso

Chelsea’s clear-out gathers pace. Xabi Alonso has drawn his lines, and the club is now moving quickly to match his vision.

The new head coach has placed eleven players on the market, and three of them are edging towards the exit as the reshaping of one of Europe’s most bloated squads accelerates.

Alonso’s hard reset

Chelsea have been busy on the way in. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have already arrived, with another deal agreed this week to further swell the numbers at Cobham.

But the squad remains vast. Unworkably so for a manager intent on control and clarity.

Sales have already passed the £100m mark, with Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George all cashed in. Even that feels like only the start. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto are all being linked with moves away, a sign of how ruthless this reset could become.

Manchester City are circling again. After previous interest in Fernandez and Gusto earlier in the window, they now have Neto on their radar. According to The Athletic, none of that trio are on Chelsea’s internal “not for sale” list. The door is not closed.

The same report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha as available. Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are described as effectively on the runway, preparing for take-off.

Chalobah first, Badiashile and Disasi to follow

Chalobah looks set to be the first of the centre-backs to go. A deal has finally been agreed with Serie A side Como, ending a long-running saga over his future and offering him a fresh start in Italy.

The dominoes may not stop there.

Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Badiashile is closing in on a move to Napoli. He claims there is an agreement in principle between the defender and the Italian club on a contract running to 2031: an initial season-long loan followed by a four-year deal, worth around €2.8m per year.

Negotiations between Napoli and Chelsea are said to be progressing for a loan with an option to buy. If that structure is finalised, it would give Napoli flexibility and Chelsea another major salary off the books.

Disasi is on a different path but heading in the same direction. After his loan spell at West Ham last season, the Frenchman has been searching for a new home. Schira reports that Crystal Palace are now closing in on a deal to take him from Chelsea on loan with an option to buy, which could become an obligation if certain conditions are met.

Three centre-backs, three different destinations, one clear message: Alonso wants a leaner, more tailored defensive unit.

Mudryk’s return adds a human note

Amid the churn of transfers and balance sheets, there was a rare emotional moment this week. Mykhaylo Mudryk, back from a doping ban, stepped onto the pitch again in Chelsea’s defeat to Juventus.

Alonso later revealed he had told Mudryk before the game that he planned to give him 10 to 15 minutes. The winger’s reaction, the coach said, was pure delight after such a long absence. For the player, it was a release; for the club, a reminder that beyond the trading, careers and reputations are being rebuilt in real time.

Now Alonso must decide what role Mudryk plays in this new Chelsea. As defenders head for the door and big names hover on the brink, the question is no longer whether the squad will change, but how radically it will look by the time the window slams shut.
