Chelsea's Pre-Season Win: Emegha Shines but Faces Injury Setback

Jamie Gittens kept his name on Xabi Alonso’s team sheet and Emmanuel Emegha kept finding the net, but Chelsea’s latest pre-season win came with an early sting in the tail.

Behind closed doors at Cobham, Chelsea eased past League One side Bromley 3-0 on Thursday, backing up last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Crawley and giving Alonso a clean, uncomplicated start to life in the dugout. The football, though, was only half the story.

Emegha scores again – then worry sets in

Emegha, the summer arrival from Strasbourg, struck for the second game running, underlining exactly why Chelsea moved early to secure him from their BlueCo sister club. Joao Pedro was on target as well, while Gittens continued his sharp opening to pre-season with another goal.

For Emegha, this was precisely what he needed. With Joao Pedro firmly established as Chelsea’s first-choice centre-forward, any challenger has to announce himself quickly. Twenty-six goals in 65 Ligue 1 appearances and the Strasbourg captaincy at 21 told one part of the story; these early strikes in blue were supposed to tell the next.

Then came the setback. During the win over Bromley, Emegha reportedly suffered a hamstring problem. By Friday, his name was missing from Chelsea’s initial 27-man squad flying out to Australia to start their pre-season tour. The momentum he had built over two games now pauses, just as it was gathering speed.

He was not the only absentee. Fellow new signing Geovany Quenda also stayed behind, understood to be dealing with a minor issue that is not considered serious.

Alonso’s sharp start and the kids’ audition

Alonso will still board the plane encouraged. Two games, two wins, seven goals scored, and a squad already beginning to respond to his demands. The opposition has been modest, but the patterns are forming and the attitude is clear.

He also used the Bromley run-out to flood the pitch with youth. Teenagers Landon Emenalo, Reggie Walsh and Reggie Watson all picked up valuable minutes as Chelsea signed off domestically with another victory before shifting the operation to the other side of the world. For them, this is the window: empty stands, no television cameras, but everything they do filtered back to a new manager still forming his opinions.

Gittens fights back into the picture

Few have more to prove than Gittens. Last season at Chelsea barely got going for him, wrecked by injuries and frustration. Now, with competition out wide tightening, he has started pre-season as if he knows there may not be many second chances.

Goals help. So does timing. With Rogers on an extended break after the World Cup with England, Gittens has space to operate and Alonso’s full attention. Each sharp run and clean finish is another argument for a bigger role once the serious football starts.

Yet the picture around him is far from settled.

Chelsea’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen teenager Kerim Alajbegovic has thrown a shadow over the current wide options. Standard Sport understands that if Chelsea decide to formalise that interest in the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, the club would have to consider moving on either Pedro Neto or Gittens, or sending Gittens out on loan.

For a player trying to re-establish himself, the margins are brutal. Score, impress, convince Alonso – or risk being the makeweight in the next big idea.

Neto’s future and a crowded wing

Neto, for now, is not being pushed towards the exit. Chelsea are not actively looking to sell the Portugal winger and have no immediate plans to offload him. But the stance is pragmatic: serious offers would be heard.

He, too, is currently away on a break after his World Cup exertions, watching from distance as Gittens uses the early friendlies to stake a claim. The battle for those wide berths will only intensify when everyone is back, fit and in front of Alonso.

Chelsea leave for Australia with a perfect pre-season record, a manager off to a confident start, and a crop of youngsters sensing opportunity. They also travel with a new striker already on the treatment table and a transfer decision looming over their wingers.

For Gittens, Emegha and Neto, this tour and the weeks that follow may not just shape Chelsea’s season – they may decide who is still around when it truly begins.
