Chelsea Reject Leeds' Loan Bid for Mudryk: Ongoing Negotiations
Chelsea have turned down an opening season-long loan proposal from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door to a deal remains very much open.
The initial offer fell well below Chelsea’s demands, both financially and in structure, yet negotiations are ongoing and the Ukraine international is understood to be keen on a move to Elland Road.
Mudryk, 25, has already agreed in principle to spend the coming campaign away from Stamford Bridge as he looks to rebuild his match fitness and reputation. He spent 20 months out of the game after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium, a suspension that only ended in July.
Since then, he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, featuring in several games from the bench as the club try to plot a careful route back for a player who once arrived as a marquee signing.
Premier League priority
Recent conversations have made one thing clear: Mudryk wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has complicated interest from Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo ownership umbrella – and from multiple Serie A sides.
Leeds have surged to the front of the queue because they are prepared to take him on a straight loan with no option to buy. That suits Chelsea, who want to retain full control of Mudryk’s long-term future while having his wages covered elsewhere this season.
The Yorkshire club have already been busy this summer, bringing in Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. A move for Chelsea striker Liam Delap had been explored earlier in the window but that interest has cooled.
Brentford, Coventry and Strasbourg still circling
Leeds are not alone. Brentford remain admirers and were viewed inside Chelsea as a serious alternative destination. The Bees, who tried to sign Mudryk months before Chelsea beat them to his signature from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial £61m in 2023, wanted an option to make any loan permanent. Chelsea pushed back on that point, and Brentford’s chances have faded as a result.
Coventry City have also registered their interest, sensing an opportunity if talks with Leeds or Brentford stall. A switch to Strasbourg is still on the table too, with Chelsea also weighing up sending other players to the French side, including midfielder Dario Essugo, as part of their broader squad-planning under BlueCo.
For now, the likeliest scenario remains a move away from Stamford Bridge. Keeping Mudryk in west London has not been completely ruled out, but with Leeds pushing, other suitors hovering and Chelsea intent on protecting a major asset, the winger’s next step looks set to be one of the more intriguing subplots of the closing weeks of the window.
