Cheltenham Town Signs Winger Jake Evans on Loan

Cheltenham Town have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the season-long loan signing of highly rated winger Jake Evans from Leicester City.

The 17-year-old arrives with something most players his age are still chasing: a genuine taste of senior football. Evans featured 16 times in League One for Northampton Town last season, learning the tempo and physical edge of the men’s game before Leicester recalled him to assess his next step.

That next step is Whaddon Road.

“I’m over the moon to be here,” Evans told the club’s website. “I have had a taste of senior football, and I just want more. I can’t wait to play for the Gaffer and the Robins fans.”

For Cheltenham boss Steve Cotterill, this is not a late, opportunistic deal. This is one he has been working on.

“Jake has been one of my targets throughout the summer,” Cotterill said, underlining just how long the Robins have been in the queue. Interest was not limited to League Two, with clubs higher up the pyramid also circling for the teenager’s signature, but Cheltenham have won the race.

That matters. When a 17-year-old with League One minutes on his CV chooses a club, he is choosing a pathway as much as a shirt.

Cotterill made a point of stressing both sides of the capture: the excitement now and the development still to come.

“As well as being an exciting player, it is also worth remembering that he is a young man learning his trade in the men’s game,” he said.

So Cheltenham get a winger with pace and promise, Leicester get one of their prospects tested properly, and Evans gets exactly what he says he wants: more football, more noise, more pressure.

How quickly he turns raw potential into end product will say plenty about Cheltenham’s ambitions this season – and about just how far this loan can take him.
