Dan Burn Named Permanent Captain of Newcastle United
Dan Burn admits even he is struggling to take it all in.
A boyhood Newcastle supporter, a towering defender who used to watch from the stands, is now the permanent captain of the club he grew up idolising. Not for a game. Not as a stand‑in. For good.
Newcastle’s new head coach Matthias Jaissle ended any speculation on Saturday, confirming Burn as the man to inherit the armband following Bruno Guimaraes’ summer departure.
“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” Burn said, the significance of the moment clear in every word. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.”
This is not a sentimental gesture. Burn has become a central figure at St James’ Park since arriving in 2021, racking up 193 appearances and anchoring a side that has pushed its way back into the Premier League’s top tier of contenders. His journey – from local lad to defensive mainstay to captain – mirrors the club’s resurgence.
“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments,” he reflected. “I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”
Jaissle sees the same drive.
“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” the head coach said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.”
The appointment also sends a clear message about what Newcastle want their dressing room to look like in a period of transition. Guimaraes’ exit has removed a star name and a big personality, but Jaissle has turned to someone who knows the fabric of the club, the city and the demands of a support that expects intensity and honesty.
“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself,” Jaissle added. “Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”
Newcastle now move into a new season with a local captain, a new head coach and a squad being reshaped around them. Burn has his armband. The question is what he and this team can build with it.
