Darwin Núñez Seeks Return to Europe After Saudi Frustration

Darwin Núñez is back on the market. Again.

A year after swapping Liverpool and the European spotlight for the Saudi Pro League, the Uruguayan striker is already pushing for the exit at Al-Hilal, unconvinced by the project and the rhythm of football in the Middle East. One season, no real breakthrough, and a World Cup that failed to relaunch his reputation: the reset button is being hit early.

He has reported back for pre-season after his holiday, but his mind is clearly elsewhere. Núñez is under contract until 2028, yet that deal now looks more like a complication than a commitment. Al-Hilal paid around €55 million for him last summer and have no intention of watching him walk away on the cheap.

Saudi frustration, European itch

The move to Riyadh was supposed to offer a fresh start, a leading role, and a chance to dominate. Instead, Karim Benzema has remained the reference point up front, and Núñez has never truly escaped the shadow of the Frenchman. For a striker who thrives on rhythm and responsibility, being second choice has cut deep.

He wants minutes. He wants status. Above all, he wants a stage that feels like it still matters in the sharp end of the game.

That is why, despite interest from across the globe, his preference is clear: he wants to return to Europe.

Besiktas step to the front

The first serious opening appears to be coming from Turkey. According to transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri, Núñez is closing in on an agreement with Besiktas, a move that would hand him what he craves most: guaranteed playing time and a central role.

The proposal on the table is a loan until the end of the season. It suits all parties in theory. Besiktas get a proven name and a physical, aggressive No. 9 to spearhead their attack. Núñez gets a competitive league, European exposure, and a chance to rebuild his value. Al-Hilal, meanwhile, avoid selling low on a player they invested heavily in just a year ago.

There is a trade-off. His salary in Istanbul would be lower than the package he could command elsewhere, particularly in MLS. For a player in his prime years, though, the competitive environment seems to matter more than the size of the paycheque.

MLS waits in the wings

The United States has not given up. MLS clubs have circled the situation and moved from curiosity to concrete offers. Atlanta United have already submitted a proposal to Al-Hilal, testing the waters for a marquee signing who still carries the aura of his Liverpool days.

On paper, the move is attractive: a leading role, star billing, and a league that continues to grow in profile. For now, it is not enough. Núñez’s priority is a return to European football, and that stance has put Besiktas in a strong position.

MLS remains an option, but at this stage, it looks like Plan B rather than the chosen path.

Barcelona lurking, but distant

In the background, another name has inevitably been linked: Barcelona. The Catalan club are determined to bring in a top striker this summer, and their first choice is clear — Julian Álvarez of Atletico Madrid and Argentina.

That pursuit is running into walls. Atletico are refusing to sell, and the operation is already being described as “very complicated”. As a result, Deco and his recruitment team have begun to scan the market for alternatives, with Núñez among the profiles discussed.

For now, that is all it is. Talk. The 27-year-old has been offered to Barcelona, but there has been no real movement from the Blaugrana, no indication that they are ready to pivot decisively towards him. With financial constraints and a defined priority in Álvarez, a late surge for Núñez feels unlikely at this stage.

So the picture is sharp but not yet final. A restless striker, a Saudi club protecting their investment, Besiktas pushing for a loan, MLS ready with money and minutes, and Barcelona watching from a distance.

Núñez wanted a new challenge when he left Europe. Now the question is simple: which continent will give him the platform to prove he still belongs among the elite?
