Dominik Szoboszlai Commits to Liverpool’s Future: Aiming for Everything

Dominik Szoboszlai has never hidden his ambition. Now it is written into Liverpool’s long-term plans.

The Hungarian midfielder has signed a new five-year contract that ties him to Anfield until the summer of 2031, ending any speculation over his future and placing him at the heart of a new era under Andoni Iraola.

He arrived from RB Leipzig in 2023. Since then, he has grown into one of the Premier League’s standout performers, a driving force in red and a fan favourite. “There’s always more to come. I’m never happy,” Szoboszlai said after signing. “I’m happy with myself but I think I can do even better.”

“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either,” he insisted. “It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”

The timing of that declaration matters. Liverpool are coming off a bruising 2025/26 campaign, one that ended without silverware and with a painful Champions League exit in the quarter-finals, a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The club has changed manager, lost three senior pillars in Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate on free transfers, and is still searching the market for successors to two of the most influential players of the Jürgen Klopp era.

Against that backdrop, Szoboszlai’s extension is more than a contract. It is a statement of intent and a stabilising anchor.

His role now stretches beyond his own performances. At 23 when he joined, he was the ambitious new arrival. Now, with trophies won and a leadership profile growing, he talks about responsibility as naturally as he strikes a ball from 25 yards.

“I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can,” he said.

Szoboszlai places this day alongside the biggest in his life. “It’s maybe my biggest day,” he admitted. “There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three.”
