Ederson's World Cup Call-Up Delays Manchester United Transfer
Manchester United’s first major move of the Michael Carrick era has hit an early complication – and it’s coming from the biggest stage of all.
Atalanta midfielder Ederson, the man United have lined up as the anchor of their new-look midfield, has been drafted into Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a late call that could delay the final steps of his transfer to Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old had initially been left out of the Selecao group, only for an injury to Roma right-back Wesley to open the door. Brazil have turned to Ederson’s versatility and bite in midfield, summoning him to join up with the squad in North America.
For United, the timing is awkward.
The club have agreed a deal with Atalanta worth an initial £35 million, a move designed to accelerate the rebuild in the middle of the pitch after Casemiro’s departure. Ederson is set to become Carrick’s first signing as permanent manager, a clear statement about how the new boss wants his team to function: more legs, more aggression, more control.
United want the transfer wrapped up as soon as possible. The framework is in place, the fee agreed, the plan drawn. But the World Cup has its own schedule, and it rarely bends for club football. Any formalities that remain and the player’s integration into Carrick’s squad will now be pushed back until Brazil’s campaign ends and Ederson can report for pre-season.
For the player, it is a sudden twist. He has three caps for Brazil but has not featured for his country since 2025. Now he walks back into the biggest tournament on the calendar, carrying both a World Cup dream and the expectation of a move to one of the game’s most scrutinised clubs.
For United, there is another subplot. The club already have 12 players heading to the 2026 World Cup. If, as expected, Ederson’s signing is confirmed, he will become the 13th Red to be involved at the tournament – a sign of the squad’s global profile, but also a reminder of how many key figures will arrive late to Carrick’s first full pre-season.
The deal remains on track. The shirt, the medical, the unveiling – all that can wait. What comes first is Brazil, a World Cup, and a midfielder whose next few weeks could shape both his country’s summer and United’s new era.
